Go to officemax.com and search for 21209292.

I've never heard of Everex but this seems to be a much hotter deal than CompUSA's HP w/ Nvidia 7600 last week.

After doing a little searching I found out most of the info I wanted about Everex laptops. Biggest problem for most people is that the keyboard is smaller on there laptops and some people have problems typing on them. This particular laptop is upgradeable to 4gb ram however like the HP at CompUSA a week prior, upgrading would mean replacing the existing chips. Also battery life seems to be poor according to most people even with the 6 cell most reporting lower than the 3 hour avg the site says. No second battery bay means limited use on the go.

anyone care to guess what the firewire chipset is in this sucker? The everex website doesn't have much in the way of detailed specs and I can't get signed up for their forum for some reason (apache errors)...

This is an excellent notebook so far, minus the battery life. I picked one up a couple months back and I am pretty impressed with it. Excellent work notebook, but enough power to play most games at satisfactory resolution / frame rate. Crank it up to 2GB and you have yourself a steal. BTW, it does indeed have a discrete 7600 Go in it.

I just ordered one, and I had to call customer support as to the instant savings. The customer support representative confirmed that the instant savings should have been taken off. Something about pecause the item is already being picked in DC for shipment she can't process the credit directly but I've been given a confirmation number that their tech side is going to credit my card $200.

I will be interested to see the performance of this machine, as the Intel offerings of a similar price have better CPU performance but this machine has a better graphics card . . . and I'm somewhat of a gamer--at least enough of one that the integrated Intel video option didn't appeal to me very much. I'd rather suffer a little in MS-Word or wahtever and pick some back up when playing (those games that can be played ok on a lappy).

S'anyway the instand savings thing you may have to call for and I imagine pretty soon they'll fix the web site.

Heya Celeryman, would you mind checking out your firewire chipset provider in Device Manager for an AT brother?

I'm looking for a decent lappy to do some music production on and unfortunately, most DAW firewire IO's don't play nice with anything other than Texas Instruments FW ports...

Thanks!

Its not 699 on the website.

You are not going to get a laptop with both a 17" screen and discreet graphics at this price. I have a Toshiba P105-9722 (C2D 2.0ghz 2gb ram, 7600go) that cost me 1099 (1299 + 200GC) I bought from BB). If I didn't have that I would jump all over this laptop.

Other forums report the processor is upgradeable and the wireless is via card meaning you can upgrade it too

I bit. Will probably regret it later when the CC bill comes in.

When I first saw this, it was the higher price $899 and said that $200 would be taken off at checkout. Guess it wasn't being done automatically. Anyways, when I bought it a few minutes ago, it was $699 all the way through.

BTW, I actually went to the local store to take a look at it... and they didn't have any at all, and never did either because I asked. However, this deal was on the back cover of their weekly ad - picked up one from the stack next to the entry. Unless Officemax totally got the thing wrong, the specs should match since at Everex's site they only list one notebook with a 17" screen and this is it, with one configuration.

http://www.everex.com/products/xt5000t/xt5000t.htm

Now, if I get sent a totally different model...

I'm hoping they get smart and leave the second memory slot open, thus I just have to pop a second 1GB module in for 2GB instead of having to get 2GB. Anyone know if these support dual channel? I somehow don't think so, but could be wrong. Having a second HDD is tempting but then this will become a money pit. More RAM will be good enough for now.

Vista Home Premium? Guess I get to check it out sooner than I thought. Was gonna get Vista for free through MSDN-AA... probably still will for a spare copy.

Looks like Newegg has this type of memory for the Stepnote on sale.

$69.99 + shipping, and $10 off with electronic coupon for CRUCIAL1GB.

Crucial 1GB 200-Pin SO-DIMM DDR2 667 Notebook Memory $59.99

Am I correct to say that this memory will work for the Stepnote?

OK...I bit...wife has been hounding me for a new laptop...this one hopefully will fit the bill! One thing that did worry me though was that Officemax did not even try to offer me an extended service plan on this thing lol

Hopefully she's okay with a DTR and wasn't looking forward to a subnotebook.

On the web checkout, when adding to cart there is a checkbox for a 3 year warranty for $150. When I went to the store, the guy there emphasized around 5 times that I should really really really really get the extended warranty, even though they didn't even have the notebook there for me to buy. If you bought in-store and they didn't offer it to you, they weren't doing their job.

For myself, I did not buy extended warranty. I used my Mastercard Platinum to purchase this for an automatic extra year of warranty (2 total). It was free shipping and tax was around 5-5.5% (depending on if they count the extra City tax of 0.5%). Also, I'm on their email list and had gotten a $30 off $200 coupon that I used. Result was just under $710 out the door. Hopefully it's a keeper.

When I tried to order online I kept getting the $899 price in the checkout...even though the website stated $699...so I had to call. I tried to use my $30 off coupon too but it wouldn't let me because this was a computer....how did you get it to work?
