Evergreen Spectra

A client of mine as an 166MMX on a Intel DN0R motherboard.

He has obtained a Evergreen Spectra 400Mhz CPU upgrade and is having problems making it work.

Does anybody else have any experience of this upgrade at all?

I know that it should have come with a CD-Rom but he does not have it, which shows the dangers of buying stuff from computer shows I suppose.

Any comments or suggestions gratefully received.

I don't know much about that particular board, but I may be able to help you some.
Socket 7 boards manufactured by Intel will work with Intel chips only, unless you can meet two requirements.

1. You must be able to supply the K6 or K6-2 with its respective voltage. Pentiums run on 3.3V, Pentium MMX on 2.8. K6 runs on 3.2, and most K6-2 run on 2.2V.

2. You must have BIOS support. Your motherboard must be able to recognize the different processor.

In the case of number 1, you're all set. The Spectra has a built-in voltage regulator which will supply the processor with the correct voltage.
So, number 2 is probably the problem. Your motherboard cannot recognize any processor other than Pentiums. So, you need to obtain a BIOS upgrade for it. In the case of upgrade chips like the Spectra, this is usually included with the upgrade unit-on the CD.

Try to find a cd somewhere, and that should fix your problem. Check out Evergreen's site for more info.
