You know you like your chanter mezzing with 3+ mobs in camp, charming with a dual wielding hasted pet, and running out to pull while there are the aforementioned 3+ mobs and a dual wielding hasted pet in camp.
Yeah.

While the wiz and the ranger and the pally and the mage and the sk the druid were wondering wtf they shouldn't just roll up a twink.

fucking chanters.

A little bump. Seems Massively.com has an article with a link to a discussion by Sony on EQ Next. Figure if you were interested in this thread you'd be interested in the next EQ installment and no need to create another on EQ. Some concept art is shown as well.

Hmm, maybe it will work better for them when they build a WoW clone from the bottom up rather than turning an existing game into a WoW clone.

If this turns out to be a new modern version of the original EQ and hopefully this will be nothing like the grind than raid stat-obsessed borefest that the original EQ was. The time demands of the higher level content was absolutely ridiculous. You'd waste hours upon hours and in the end there was no guarantee you'd come away with any kind of reward. Those were the reason why I dumped my account and shift to WOW, right now im getting fun in gear up my toons and buy engineering stuff by means of buy wow gold.

You're buying wow gold with cash?

Why bother making EQ3 if EQ2 failed so bad they are making it free to play or charge a ton to have better abilities like they are doing for the $200 cost.

Which is why most people enjoyed EQ1... Not everybody could be l33t. You'd actually have to know what you were doing and spend the time to do it. When you seen someone who actually got there the hard way your jaw would drop.

Not every wizard can be Gandolf, not every ranger be an Aragorn. EQ1 had that system setup and it was great. WoW everybody is Gandolf and Aragorn.

SOE would be wise to spend time making some sort of engine that can procedurally convert EQ1 zones / data into a newer engine. Something that could automatically update all of EQ1s content and then a series of great tools for a dev team to use to manage quests / rework mobs / etc.

Basically, they already have an absolutely massive world at their finger tips that most people haven't fully explored at all. However, trying to manually port this massive world over to a new game would take much too long, you need to automate it. There would still need to be some sort of manual touch up work, but the idea would be to make as much grunt work happen on it's own so that they could release massive bulk content at a time.

Perhaps even take it 1 step further where you could update content globally and it would automatically update all previous zones. That way future updates would be possible.

Risk should = Reward.

Not everyone was so enthralled. Watching my friends playing EQ1 and UO was what kept me out of MMOs for years. It looked awful and unbalanced, with some really bad game design. As early attempts out of the chute, you have to expect some real major flaws.

Nostalgia for the first game played leads people to ascribe more virtue to these games than they probably really had.

You'd like to think so but you'd be wrong. I've gone back to EQ1 on probably 12 different occasions. Everything from going back to my original characters, to starting over, to succession servers, to emulated servers.

However, EQ1 also isn't my first MMO, not by a long shot. I played UO, I played Realms, and I played several others before EQ1, including MUDs. UO and EQ1 both did a lot of things right that future games simply haven't replicated.

That doesn't mean that WoW does everything wrong, it actually does a lot right, unlike many, many of it's peers. However it is by and large a very casual game and a completely different experience. Some people like to be challenged, some people don't I guess.

I happen to like the grind in a way. It forced many people to explore the world. With today's MMO's, all you do is go online, read about where the fastest exp gain is and go from 1-60 in a week. You gained levels fast but did you really play the game? Did you really explore the world? No. I started MMO gaming with UO and later EQ1 and I can tell you that I remember those worlds much better than anything I did in EQ2 or my brief stay in WoW.

Keep in mind that grinding doesn't mean I like to go hours on end in a dungeon with no rewards. For instance, camping in Sebilis there was a chance for loot but some nights you could go there and get only a few hundred plat in gems and other salable items. Not a huge gain really. And that was one of the better dungeons to go for loot. There should be some sort of reward system but the truly desirable items, like the Fungi Tunic in Sebilis should require work.

EQ1 had some absolutely wonderful (once the bugs were worked out) dungeons such as Sebilis, Splitpaw, Chardok, Crystal Caverns, Velk's Lab. Some of them really had unique personalities and gave off a unique atmosphere rather than having any sense of being a "me too" dungeon.
