Hey all,

UPDATE 11/20/04

Well most of these deals have become better that what was initially mentioned during pre-release so you if you do some searching you can probably find the game for maybe under $40 now. At the bottom, you will find a mini review of what I think of the game so far if you want to check that out.

Anyways, I preordered my copy from GoGamer.com

Total for the game, plus CA tax, and FEDEX overnight shipping came to $58.37

You can also go through Gamestop (aka EB games) and you can get the game for $49.99 with free 3-5 day shipping. I'm paying the extra ~$9 to get the game ASAP.

When you preorder the game, you get the following:

The EQII Starter Kit. You get the game's character creation tool that lets you create and save your character before launch!

Unique account key that will grant your character a pair of Journeyman Boots for an extra burst of speed when you play the game.

Special offers for incredible savings on PC upgrades, including video cards from NVIDIA.

Features special EverQuest II content including a behind the scenes video, exclusive MP3s from the soundtrack and the official trailer.

Time to say goodbye to your friends, family, and job! Evercrack is here!

More deals consolidated from other posters (thanks for their contributions):

Outpost.com DVD Version $39.99 + S/H

CompUSA.com has the DVD or CD version for $49.99 with Penny Overnight Shipping.
Search Product Numbers: 315986 (DVD) or 315985 (CD) NOTE THAT WITH COMPUSA IT IS UNCLEAR WHETHER YOU RECEIVE THE PREORDER STARTER KIT OR NOT.

::::MY MINI-REVIEW::::

I'll give my impressions of the game so far.

I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical when purchasing EQII, but am glad I did. Overall, I would give the game so far an 8 out of 10. Let me start with what I don't like. The only major issue I've had so far is with choppiness and lag inside city zones in which there are a lot of players or things going on in a dense area. At times, it gets so choppy that I have to let my computer "catch up" before I can even move. This doesn't always happen though and seems to occur mainly during peak hours (like in the early evenings). It has seemed to get better as well. In terms of other criticism, the quest system is great but needs a little finetuning. I don't like how you can obtain quests in which you have absolutely no chance at completing for another 10 levels (even with a decent group). The only good thing about this is you can save the quest for later, but by then you have so many high level quests built up, its hard to remember and keep track of all of them. Also with quests that require multiple steps, sometimes your quest journal doesn't always update as quickly as it should. There are still many bugs, but most of which are fairly minor when you take the entire game into mind. Server stability has been pretty good so far, and in the two weeks I've been playing now there has only been two server downtimes when I've attempted to log on.

Now to the good stuff. The graphics and combat is really quite amazing. I like many of the various gameplay features they have added. The navigation system both in terms of maps and questing is excellent and makes getting around from place to place much easier and more enjoyable. For example, if you are inside a city and need to find a certain person you can ask a guard who will give you directions to the person. You can also toggle your map, click on a landmark, and it will give you a wisp (a fuzzy gold line) that guides you to where you need to go. Obtaining quests is usually quite simple as well and there are plenty of quests to complete. Unfortunately some of them aren't as worth it as others (ie..getting 20 copper for spending an hour doing a quest), but that's just part of the game. Some of the more specialized quests are nice because during one of the final tasks you actually go into a separate "quest zone" made just for you or your group. What this basically means is that you don't always have to wait for something to spawn AND you don't have 5 groups all wanting to complete the same quest as you at the same time. Combat is pretty straightforward and simple for the most part and similar to any other MMORPG I've played such as EQ 1 and DaOC.

I think many of you critics are in for a surprise with this game. The launch went much smoother than many thought and the game without a doubt is READY TO PLAY. Have fun and hope this helps some.

I preordered @ the EB by my work. $5 preorder about a month ago, then paid the remaining balance yesterday. So I'm all set!

Thanks for starting the thread. C-USA has it for $49.99 plus tax for either the CD or DVD edition, and penny overnight shipping. I don't see any mention of the character creator CD though so I'm not sure about that.

Cheers

I have been looking forward to the game, but I have no time. Anybody know the subscription fee? I know sony is selling a 90-day card for $45 here?

Nice, I may do that as well ... I hate how ebgames and all that take 1-2 extra days when they release a game ...

Hmm 50.00 game.. forever and ever recurring costs for as long as you play it.. I believe a minimum of 14.00 a month?

I don't friggin think so.. how about a FREE game and subscription service for 10.00 a month.

sure.. 500.00 for a game makes sense.. uh huh.. feel free to be fleeced. "baaahhhhhh...."

I don't have a problem with paying 60.00 for a video game.. as long as I can play it anytime I want to without paying more.

I don't understand the fees either. I know the servers have to be maintained, but c'mon. They could at least lower the cost of purchasing the game or give it way like you said.

It's "steal" a great looking game though.

i originally thought the monthly fee thing was a total rip off. My buddy was trying desperately to get me to buy CIty of Heroes, but i couldnt deal with shelling out 50 bucks plus another 15 a month.

Finally he forced me to get it when he was in town and we were both in a eb store.

I dont think ive ever been as obssessed with a video game before in my life. The 15 bucks in my opinion is well worth it. Ive logged prob close to 60 hrs or so in the last month. Considering the few games i pay 50 bucks for i spend prob 10-30 hrs at most, i think the monthly sub fee is more than worth it if the game is any where near as addictive as COH is.

Granted i think they should lower the initial price a bit, but if the game is fun im more than willing to shell out the money.

The big question remains, Worlds of Warcraft, or EQ 2...

Im leaning toward WOW since ive heard fom the early beta testers about how awesome that game is, but the more i see of the eq graphics the harder that decision is becoming.

And don't forget the way EQ likes to keep coming out with expansions!

I can understand why people don't like the subscription fee (which for EQ2 I think will be close to $15 per month).

The other side of it though is that unlike other games, Everquest II is constantly being improved upon. They add new spells, quests, lands, etc that you aren't going to get in most other multiplayer games. Those monthly fees dont just go into maintaining the servers, but also paying tech and cust. support staff and programmers who add the extra features.

I could see offering the game for less though up front. That way, it forces the companies to become more responsible for the content they offer in order to entice and keep their already existing customers paying the monthly fee.

That does make sense, but how does it work do they charge you by the hour. Which is approximately $.02. Or do they just charge you the flat fee. $15 isn't that much if you think about it, but some people will be playing umpteen hours, while others will be playing only a few hours a week. I definately think they should charge by the hour. Does you character get wiped out if you don't play for a while?

In the end I probably won't get this game or WOW, just don't have the time for the fee. If I knew I would be able to play the game anout 40hrs/month then that would be different, but since I have a life it will be out of the question.

I'm also interested in reading the reviews. I never buy a game when it first comes out, unless I've played the beta.

The monthly fee is flat rate. You can play as much or little as you want. The first month is generally free so you can decide if you want to continue or not. It just depends...if you enjoy multiplayer gaming like I do, and you have the time to play it, the fee is worth it. If you play like 2 hours a week, not only are you not going to get anywhere in the game, but you aren't getting much bang for your buck either. I don't believe your character gets wiped out unless the account is inactive (meaning you are no longer paying the monthly fee) and it has to be inactive for probably at least 60 days. Don't quote me on this, but that's usually how these games work.

Funny you said that, a lot of power guilds quit EQ because of SoE.

I'm a beta for WoW and EQ2, and I think SoE would have to pull code from a magical hat if they wanna release by Nov 8 without a lot of bugs and balance issues.

I would like to know how much time, hrs/per day, on average do some of you spend playing these games. Just curious.

Sony/verant has possibly the crappiest support staff ever. The $15 a month is NOT going to support staff.

I played everquest when it was relatively new. I had my corpse get stuck in a wall unretrievable and no matter what I did (including logging out and back in as well as several other things) I could not see it. My buddy could. I petitioned an admin and /consented my buddy (back when that let you loot). He looted everything except my nodrop Jman boots and gave it to me. Corpse rotted. Guide finally got to me, said the server GM would contact me. I sent repeated petitions for the next three months. Finally I actually saw the server GM on the server. So I asked about it. She said to wait a minute, then said because it had been three months she could not possibly replace the boots (which by then were a long, tedius and difficult (for a level 30-something) quest instead of a simple drop.) I've also had an assembled group of players dispersed by a guide so that a clan (of which many members were supposedly guides) could kill the dragon we had cleared the way to. This was back when the only things to do on the server were kill the dragons. (Which took a freaking week in the real world to spawn)

I've been playing EQ2 beta for almost a month now. While I have really enjoyed playing beta I was dismayed at the annoucement of the Nov. 8th release date. From everything I've seen so far, this game is nowhere near close to being ready for release.

I as well am in the EQ2 beta. I do not believe that this game is ready for release. I would recommend waiting for World of Warcraft. I am not in that beta but did play in the stress test and had more fun in that time than I have in EQ.

*edit* I highly recommend gogamer.com however, so if you want the game get it from them.
