Raon Digital Everun Note kills the VAIO P without even breaking into a sweat.

I tried both of these at a Croma outlet. I was very very presently surprised with the Raon. The Everun Note seemed almost similar in former factor and it seemed a bit smaller than the VAIO P "YES SMALLER".

I tried 3 tests.

First of all the speaker test. The speakers on both were tiny and gave a very treble happy voice but if i used the bass setting in WMP the speakers in the Sony P started to crackle. Almost the same happened with the Everun note but at a much higher bass setting. The loudness of both seemed equal but VAIO was a bit clearer.

Secondly I tried to play a game on the machines. I had Doom3 on my Pendrive and woot it worked well with the Raon not so well with the Sony P "Must be the drivers all i got was the intro to ID software and then noting".

Thirdly the pocket test "as seen on TV" When no one was looking i tried putting the VAIO P in my back jeans pocket and it went in quite snuggle "But walking will be out of the question". The Everun Note did not go in quite well it almost tore my pocket, its too fat to go in a pocket of a normal Levi jeans.

Now to the difference in specs that the sales rep told me and i remember:-
The Everun Note is heavier than the Vaio P "I did not notice that"
The Everun Note is fatter "I did notice that"
The Sony P is new.
The Everun Note uses AMD not Intel, you know Pentium guys.

So, whats the conclusion. I can get the Everun or wait for Congo platform which was my original idea. But even Congo will transform into something similar to a everun note but with better graphics. At the end of the day don't go for the Sony P just get your self a HP Vivienne Tam instead.

I would hate to see the jeans you where that can actually fit a P in the pocket. Seriously a Vivienne Tam? Get a Mini 1000 and stick a skin on it and save yourself a couple hundred dollars.

Unfortunately Raon is bankrupt from fixing all the defective Note's. I still might pick one up though if I can find one for the right price. There is quite a following on UMPC Portal.

Can you be more specific of how the Everun "kills the VAIO P without even breaking into a sweat?" It can't be based on the three quick tests as the speaker test would be the only thing that would would push the Everun above the P. More info please. I am actually looking to buy something like these devices in the next couple of months (leaning towards a used UX-280P at this time as a compromise).

You can see some comparison pics between the Vaio P and the Everun Note

I also have to agree with the above poster that starting your post with a sweeping statement like - the Everun "kills the Vaio P without even breaking into a sweat" sounds a bit bias. Frankly, I would disagree. I think both machines are great, but ultimately I believe "better" is relative to each individuals needs in a UMPC.

Between the two - they're fairly different machines. One is a touch screen UMPC, while the other is not. Touchscreen is great, but I am disappointed to see that the Note can't be flipped like a tablet (although I suppose it compensates by being able to lie flat at a full 180 degrees).

Another thing - the Vaio P was made to be typed on. Yes - the Vaio P is wider, but for good reason. It was built around the keyboard. I've had the pleasure to type on one and it's great. For such a small device, I'd say the keyboard is better than many of the full(er) sized netbooks out there.

Screen size/resolution. The vaio's 8" LED screen runs at a ridiculous 1600x768. This is a plus and a minus. Some people love the resolution - some people can't stand the eye strain - but nobody will deny how gorgeous things look on the LED backlit screen at such a high resolution.

The 7" screen at 1024x600 is pretty standard screen. I personally think the sweet spot is a 1366 x 768. 600 vertical pixels is just a bit to short in my opinion.

Processor - The Vaio P's standard 1.3ghz atom is pathetic. The Everun Note (or anything else for that matter) will trounce the vaio P. For some, this is a deal breaker, but for most day to day tasks, it's not such a big deal. You're not going to run crysis on it - and slap an SSD into either machine and they'll both zip along just fine. I'd say the majority of the people purchasing the Vaio P are just looking to use it to respond to emails on the go, work on a few documents here and there and that's about it. For that - the 1.3ghz atom is more than adequate. Personally though - I'd wait for the 1.8ghz and above before I considered the Vaio.

So in the end - each has it's pros and cons - it boils down to what you're looking for personally in a UMPC.

what exactly are you looking for in a UMPC.

I've owned the UX280P and the UX180P for a few months. Ended up giving one away and selling the other.

I loved the screen and the form factor. The slideout keyboard was handy (although a bit tricky to type on). It was also a fairly decent machine with the 1.2ghz ULV core solo. It had no problems playing a 720p movie downloaded on it (although the screen resolution is only 1024x600 - still a bit too short for fully viewing webpages).

Why I ultimately sold the UX? The battery life was mediocre (barely 2 hours for me) - and the extended battery sticks out from the side - making it impossible to type.

And then there's the non upgradeable 1gb of memory. Call me a excessive, but I think nowadays 1gb just doesn't cut it.

The fan noise and heat it produced was also pretty significant. When the fan spun up - it was quite audible.

I really wanted to keep the UX, but it just seemed behind in tech. Battery life is also pretty important to me. So in the end, it didn't work out for me, so those are some things to consider.

Why even consider a product made by a defunct company?

Raon

Looks like Sony wins by default.
