I would say right now and in the past (on average). If you were to quantify xenophobia (as a number). It's pretty high in the US (like 7-8 out of 10).... I'm not sure I agree that other countries are "just as bigot/racism/etc".

I am not sure how you qualify xenophobia, but in the way I see it, there is no way I would agree that 70-80% of Americans are xenophobic.

Take Canada in terms of how it treats groups.

http://aptn.ca/news/2015/05/02/inuk-soldier-wanted-die-decade-racism-sexual-harassment-broke/

Just do a quick google search and you will see that just about every country has had a horrible past to some group or another. People can be real assholes. The US is not exempt from this sadly. What I can say for sure is that in the long run we have gotten better. You will always have times when stupid fears take over, but eventually those fears subside and we get back on track.

Do you think there is a country out there that has not had a bad past? Canadians are probably better toward Muslims, but they can be real bastards too.

My daughter's best friend is a black muslim. A very intelligent and nice person. She is SECULAR. Islam as practiced in much of the world is BROKEN. It needs to be fixed. Much of the hate for Islam originates from weekly Islamist terrorist attacks around the world and from draconian Sharia laws.

I do believe your fear is well-founded. If America began to experience weely terror attacks from Muslims, eventually there would be strong reaction that would include internment and deportment.
No, his fear isn't well founded. After all the anti-refugee rhetoric, there was an outpouring of support for the refugees in many areas by people sick and tired of the fear-mongering. And, shot in the dark here without actually looking it up, but I think the majority of Muslims in the U.S. are actually citizens. You don't get to deport citizens. And after WWII's Japanese camps, I really believe our country wouldn't be dumb enough to do that again. I'm willing to bet a large sum of money that Trump will not be elected President. The Republican Candidate will likely be Rubio, Cruz, or Bush. The Democratic candidate will be Hilary. In all likelihood, Clinton will win. Possible chance: Trump runs as a 3rd party. That would guarantee a Clinton win.

If that's what you believe, you're ignorant and paranoid.

For the first time, I'm actually feeling I may need to leave the United States for a few years. Seems like I hear about this type of thing every day now. My father is a Muslim. Although I'm non religious, I do identify with Muslims.

I would normally think of the discrimination that I have faced (growing up) was chalked up to a few bigots, not representative of the entire group. However, in this video everyone is clapping around this guy???? I've been getting the feeling, that this is the case in many situations now.

If we get a GOP president (esp Donald Trump). I strongly fear a situation where Muslims and those of middle-eastern ancestry are legally targeted (i.e. internment camps, database etc...).

I can't really help you but there are other people out there who are in similar positions are yours who may be able to offer you advice: http://www.reddit.com/r/exmuslim

Trump won't be voted in, btw.

When a bunch of low life Rednecks protest outside a Mosque brandishing AR 15s, you know that Muslims in the US are in more danger than the rest of the population.

Moot. This Mosque has no connection to those things.

Imagine if people started "protesting" outside of random Churches the same way because of the PP shooting.

To be clear, I'm not saying attacks on mosques are justified. With few exceptions, American Muslims are not the problem; most are relatively secular by world standards.

That said... moot? That's a very US-centric attitude, yet not surprising. Americans will flip out over protests at mosques, yet completely ignore what is happening all around the world. Americans have no idea what REAL religious intolerance looks like.

The OP is concerned about being a Muslim in the US. The situation may not be as bad as the rest of the world(certain parts anyway), but it is deteriorating.

Islamophobia is stupid.

The people who taught me that religion is not just a tool for the powerful to control the weak, but that it can also be a force for good for many people, happen to be Muslim.

I am still non-religious, and do not buy into any superstitious thoughts, but, I have toned down my rhetoric quite a bit.

Xenophobia is a terrible disease, and we should do everything we can to help cure it.

I do not believe that trump is actually true/real xenophobe, he is just feeding the people the garbage he thinks they want. he is an abrasive asshole, shitting all over the place like a diarrhea infused water balloon exploding into a shower of impurity.

Red states can be pretty awesome places. Lots of amazing people in South Carolina, it might have been ground 0 for the KKK, but, lots of beauty and hospitality there too. This red state vs blue state garbage is stupid. We shouldn't be fighting amongst each other, we should be fighting with the corporate overlords, the ones closing the factories and shipping the jobs overseas, the politicians who tell us one thing and do another, while taking bribes up the wazoo... I miss the days of liberals and conservatives arguing, but, honestly, these days, authoritarians and bullshitters have taken over all the higher offices.

I'm glad you found some people who were decent. Most American Muslims are. But Muslims themselves say "please don't lump all Muslims into one basket." There's a spectrum of beliefs and practices. http://www.pewforum.org/2013/04/30/the-worlds-muslims-religion-politics-society-overview/

Your term Islamophobia is a loaded term. People can be against Islam for many different reasons. E.g., please consider how logically screwed up it is for people to claim to be for women's rights, gay rights, freedom of religion, etc., and yet support Islam which as it is practiced by most Muslims (American Muslims are nonrepresentative and make up only 0.002% of Muslims worldwide) is heavily discriminatory. Many Muslims polled by Pew are in favor of the death penalty for apostasy (atheism or converting away from Islam), for example.

Your response to my questioning that there are "lots of them" is to post a single example?

Bravo.

I was looking for some examples that happened right after September 11th, but lo and behold there is an example in the last 3 months. Use your brain to realize what is reality here.

This not enough?

Sikhs continue to experience a high volume of hate crimes. In the last twelve months alone, a Sikh professor was assaulted in Harlem; a Sikh pedestrian had his turban forcibly removed near Wall Street; a Sikh business owner was run over and dragged under a truck in Queens; and a Sikh doctor was assaulted on Roosevelt Island.

According to a 2009 Sikh Coalition report, 41 percent of Sikhs surveyed in New York City had been called derogatory names, such as “Osama bin Laden” or “terrorist.” According to the same report, 9 percent of Sikh adults have been physically assaulted since 9/11 because of their religious identity.

A 2009 Sikh Coalition report found that 60 percent of turbaned Sikh youth had experienced verbal and physical assaults in their schools.

The NYPD bans turbaned Sikhs from serving as police officers. On the other hand, turbaned Sikhs are allowed to serve as police officers in major cities throughout the world, including Washington, DC, London, and Toronto. Turbaned Sikhs also serve with distinction in the U.S. Army.

According to a 2012 joint report coordinated by South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT), 73 percent of New Yorkers of South Asian origin have been questioned by law enforcement officers about their national origin; 66 percent have been questioned about their religious affiliation; and 85 percent have been questioned about their immigration status.

I don't think you need to worry about internment camps, that's a bit over the top in my opinion.

As to databases: mostly misinformed misinformation. What we've learned from Snowden is that you don't need to fear being placed on list or in a database because you're already in a database, and so is everybody you know. The databases are massive beyond belief and operators/agents types in search terms (selectors) and the computers return results.

You're in there, I'm in there, everyone's in there. If you use facebook then a tremendous amount of your behavior is in there as well since everything that facebook has is in there. And since facebook tracks your behavior as well as your overt "likes, comments & things you type but don't submit" a great deal of everyone's behavior is in there as well. None of this is secret, it's widely known public knowledge in today's world. If you're worried about "Muslim" selectors being searched for, why? Such selectors have certainly been used to query those databases. As to Trump's talk of lists & media's frenzy on that topic, my guess is that Trump doesn't really know how that stuff works. Neither apparently does the media... the very same media which has been reporting the snowden stuff. Media is truly brain-dead.

Anyway, my 2c

OP: Buy a gun and protect yourself, it's a constitutional right after all even if you're Muslim. If someone threatens you in a fashion that may result in causing you physical harm based on your ethnicity or perceived religious affiliation, don't back down. You don't owe anyone an apology and have every right to defend your liberty.

And no, leaving the US isn't the answer, the real answer is to push back in mass rally's like the BLM movement and not take shit from these clowns. American Muslims aren't responsible for the crap ISIS does in the ME and should never apologize for them. You don't see whites apologizing for Christian violence or any other individuals from other racial/ethnic groups having to apologize for their religious affiliation or background. This is simple political scapegoating and it will continue until Muslim Americans speak up and push back.

Right now these cowards, like the ones in Texas, are trying to intimidate innocent Muslim Americans by showing up armed in front of their mosques and nothing is said or done about it. It's because American Muslims are staying under the radar because of the rampant media finger pointing and having to always be on the defensive. Can you imagine if these assholes did the same to a synagogue? The ADL would be all over them and people would be in an uproar over it.
