Crazy deal. Notice they only list some lame phones in the post, but it applies to the Skyrocket, Epic Touch, Rezound, and Razr.

If my two-year contract is up and I'm month to month, is it still $0.01? Not sure if this is considered a new line or am I forced to get a new number?

I'm currently grandfathered on unlimited data and $10 txting on AT&T and don't want to lose them.

I doubt you'd be considered a new line. You should be able to start a new line and port your number over to circumvent that, but then you'd lose the grandfathered features of your current line. They have us right where they want us

Makes it kind of tough for me to decide whether to get a free phone now (e.g. GSII or Rezound), or wait for the Galaxy Nexus to come stateside. Hmmm...

Do both. Sell first phone to get Nexus if you deem it better once it's out.

This is something I never understood. Usually people get phones for >$200 with subsidized pricing but I always hear people talking about swapping to a new one, selling one, etc. How do people do this? On a 2 yr contact how can you just "sell" your phone and "buy" a new one? I know you can actually buy them at retail pricing but how many people actually do that? Isn't there a massive $$ penalty for breaking contracts?

As long as you stay with the same carrier, you're not breaking your contract. This is especially easy with GSM providers (AT&T, T-Mobile) because you can just swap your SIM card into another phone. The carrier only cares about the service you're buying, not which phone you're using; that's not factored into your 2-year contract agreement.

If you're lucky, it's a net wash when you sell your old phone and buy the new one at full retail price. If you start with a new iPhone, you can always sell those at higher prices and then buy an android or wp7 phone at a lower price from craigslist or something.

Well, I guess in a situation like this, you might:

1) Buy the HTC Rezound on Verizon for $0.01 through Amazon
2) Sell it on eBay for ~$450-$500 in a month
3) Buy an unsubsidized Galaxy Nexus for Verizon for $600-$700 when it comes out

So your net out of pocket would be $100 to $250 depending on how much you sell the Rezound for, and how much the unsubsidized Galaxy Nexus costs.

I admit it, I have never owned a cell phone....

Dumb question, if I do a deal like this, get a new Razr with Verizon say, and after two years end the contract, will the phone still work as a handheld Android device I could use for non-phone Android apps? I am particularly interested in using the phone as a ballistics calculator for long range shooting after the contract is up and I decide to not renew month to month.

I've yet to pay for a phone myself. Always patient to wait for deals like these to come along. Currently on the HTC 8525 and want to upgrade but the plans are killing me; they're at least double what I'm paying now, sigh. For what I use the phone for, it's probably not worth it for me to upgrade at all.

I'm still rockin' an OG Moto Droid. 'Course it's rooted running Pete's BB (2.3.7 GPA 19) at 1.0ghz, but I'm definitely in the market for a new phone now that my contract is almost up. I had no idea you could just swap out phones on a carrier, figured they would "notice" or something and shut you off.

Yes, it'll work fine.

Thanks guys. So if I want to use one of these phones long term as a non-phone, hand held application device, I would think being able to replace the battery every few years would be important. Which of these top of the line phones allow the user to replace batteries? It looks like most of these would have proprietary battery designs that would force you to trash the phone once the battery doesn't hold a charge anymore.

Most of them have easily replaceable batteries - too many of them to list. However, note that the Droid RAZR is one of the few hi-end phones WITHOUT a removable battery.

Interesting, good to know most of them are replaceable. The RAZR was first on my list due to its touted build quality. It would be good for my outdoor "in the boonies" fun. Could you recommend a phone that is rugged like the RAZR with a replaceable battery?

By the way, I should have said the RAZR isn't easily user-replaceable, but it is replaceable, as revealed in this iFixit teardown.

The brand-new HTC Rezound, like many HTC phones, is extremely rugged and has an easily-replaceable battery.

All the decent Android phones I've looked at so far are at least $95 with a two-year re-up. I hate that AT&T won't offer loyal customers the same deals they do new ones. Truly sucks.

Anyone here actually done this 1-cent deal at Amazon ever? Looks like you just add everything to cart and checkout.... Not that I don't trust Amazon, always had good service. Just seems too good to be true.

The phones come activated? Or do I have to go into Verizon and have them try to sell me everything in the story? Looking to move from Tmobile to Verizon (wanted to go sprint, but it seems stupid to get a brand spankin new LTE phone only to be stuck on 3G until mid next year or whenever Sprint rolls out their LTE service, just for philosophical reasons) and start a new family plan with the fiance, in case it matters.

I got my Moto Bravo for a penny on Amazon last year. Still enjoy it, but would like to upgrade my son's phone. All the decent ones are near a hundred bucks for current customers.
