Alcohol kills more people than any other drug except for tobacco. No one is telling you to stop drinking; just don't be hypocrites and hate on others for their recreational activities when you're just like them.

Btw, I had an experimental phase a few years back as well as a prolonged period of smoking cannabis, but I found it to be boring after a while and quit. So no, I'm not some right wing bastard.

You're logic is flawed. The individual consumption of alcohol does not infringe upon others natural right to liberty; last time I checked, rape would be a pretty serious violation of someone's liberty, even if it was, as you so plainly put it, 'socially acceptable.'

And as far as alcohol killing more people than other drugs, it's merely a matter of statistics. More people drink than do drugs, so it is easy to say "alcohol kills more people." And not even that, look at how people die with alcohol - they are not necessarily drinking themselves to death like you can easily do with some drugs (and not over a long period of time like liver cirrhosis), the majority are most likely killed through stupid actions taken after they've already inebriated themselves (meaning they are not directly killed by the consumption of alcohol in a chair in their own home). In addition, plenty of drugs are much more self-destructive than alcohol; ever take a look at what methamphetamine does to people?

You should try stepping off your high horse before you fall and hurt yourself.

Ugh, and your English is sloppy. Please fix it and keep the difference between "they're," "their" and "there" in mind in the future.

I say legalize and tax it. Let's face it, pot is readily available if your looking, so the "war"
on drugs has failed badly there. Just tax it and generate revenue instead of wasting
$$$ on locking people up ($40K/yr) and wasting more $$$ trying to stem the flow..

The idiocy of Marijuana being illegal is incredibly obvious. There's no other side to this issue. It should be legal. It makes economic sense and most importantly, it's in the interest of freedom.

Yet no politician will say it. How fucked up is the level of discourse in this country that stating a simple fact will destroy your political career. Yet imagine the support a mainstream presidential candidate who supported the legalization of pot AND opposed gun control could garner. The drug guys + the gun guys = the majority of the country.

Marijuana is illegal because it's "bad", and it's "bad" because it's illegal. Circular reasoning.

I can't really argue with you. I happen to not drink or do drugs. The reason is the same for both of them... i don't like my mental state to be changed/impaired. It is pretty hypocritical for someone who like a drink in moderation to feel superior to someone who smokes in moderation.

I would just like to point out that the fact that one is illegal and the other isn't, is a major difference. When you take drugs, you're risking a criminal record and often are putting your job at risk. If you're in a line of work where you might get tested, or use drugs in a way where you get caught, you still deserve to be criticized. You knew the risks when you started, and they are a lot higher risks than with alcohol.

Except that enjoying a few quite drinks, particularly of red, is arguably likely to lead me to live longer

I'm infinitely better than anyone who takes illegal drugs, because I don't take illegal drugs.

I'd argue that there's a huge difference between alcohol and those illegal drugs the OP mentioned. They're illegal for a reason, and maybe spending five minutes reading about LSD, e's, coke, and even good old mary jane would give you a clue why.

Your example of rape just shows how deluded you are. How the fuck does raping someone equate to enjoying a glass of red? One is completely legal, and doesn't need to affect anyone around you. The other is basically the worst thing you can do to anyone.

You're a pathetic joke if you believe that's a valid analogy, mate.

You're right, rape was a bad example, but you gave me another point. Replace alcohol in that sentence with marijuana; does it hold the same truth? Yes, but one is legal, and one is not.

As for your statistics view, I think you underestimate the amount of people that do drugs, and if I were to choose one of them to compare to alcohol, I'll take the most popular and fought for, marijuana. It is definitely easy to say alcohol kills more people, because as far as research has shown, marijuana has never killed anyone. Ever.

Most likely killed through stupid actions? You mean actions that they otherwise would not have done while sober? Exactly, because as a drug, it clouds their judgment.

Fuck your high horse.

So your morality trumps all. And you know enough and are so aware that you feel you can dictate how others should behave in their lives.

I suppose we should all be a certain religion too...

He already admitted it was a bad analogy, and he's also said he's mostly talking about marijuana.

Also, do you think there should be limits on how much you can drink? If you're an excessive drinker you can certainly harm yourself as much as anyone on harder drugs. If not allowing people to harm themselves was the primary reason we make this stuff illegal, why is alcohol use so completely unregulated?

That he made that allegation to start with disturbs me more than the rest of his argument.

Who says something like that?

As for regulation of alcohol use, do some reading about Government intervention in various northern and central towns in Western Australia (where I live), and the Northern Territory.

I'm well aware it can ruin your life, and those around you, and where it's clear society has failed in managing people's responsible use of alcohol, I do think it is appropriate to step in.

That's happened here, not just in country towns where it's clearly got out of hand, but also in terms of pub opening hours, and limits what they can and can't sell (in terms of shooters and jugs). It's also quite obviously limited by your age. It's exactly like being able to vote, or join the army (and in the US, to own a gun), society deems you to be responsible enough to handle it.

It's a regulated drug, but it's also a legal drug. At the end of the day I'm infinitely better than anyone who takes illegal drugs, because I don't take illegal drugs.

Let's play "Say Whaaaaaat!?"

A gallon of this substance will kill most people. It is legal.

A telephone-poll-sized amount of this substance will kill most people. It is illegal.

Go!

The OP has a point. Alcohol is far more dangerous than pot, but yet it is socially acceptable.

<rant>
Then again, the people who make our laws and run our country aren't too bright.
Have to pimp geniocracy, because stupid people vote stupid people into power.

Hey now... not EVERYONE who drinks is a moron. Most people know how to do it responsibly!

That said, those zanejohnson posts that I've been reading recently are starting to make me question that...
