I also work on just about everything dell makes and i have to disagree with you. Dell makes the best servers on the market, and their work stations are trouble free.

I also have no problems with their support. we spend the extra money and get the 4 hour response for parts and have never had a problem getting a new hard drive when they fail.

edit** i just looked at my spreadsheet that i put all the service tags witht he computer name on and we have just over 500 dell systems. about 80 of them are poweredge servers.

We have over 5,000.

Their servers are a different story altogether, as well as the support for those systems.

...cannot find a big place that puts good hardware in their PCs anymore...

I've got a couple HP Pavilions here that use Asus A7V8X-LA motherboards, AMD Athlons, and Western Digital HDDs. They were dirt cheap, quiet as a tomb, and easy to access. WTF is wrong with that?

BTW, tell me how to slap together parts of that "inferior caliber" as cheap!

I gotta order something soon, but can't decide which to go with:
  • Dimension 4700 2.8GHz 256MB 40GB 17" $479 and free shipping

    • $20 drop. Configure the Dimension 4700 $479 system. The base configuration is $579 - $100 rebate= $479 with free shipping.
    • Pentium-4 2.8GHz HT, 256MB DDR2, Dell Keyboard/Mouse, 40GB SATA
    • 48x CDROM, Integrated Video, 5.1 Audio, Free ISP, 10/100 Ethernet, XP Home
    • 2-Yr Warranty, 17" E173FP Flat Panel Display
    • PCI Express slot
I don't need or want the LCD panel, and there's no way to get any credit for it. I'd have to sell it on my own I guess. Also, Dell charges me state tax.

I'd rather go with HP, but the deal's not as "Hot":

dells are the best of the pre-builts. I still think that anyone can build a machine that works better and more efficiently on there own though.

This is the absolute truth, 95% of the dell cs reps it seems are people living in the phillipines, india or whatever else country outside of the us that provides cheap labor at the cost of quality cs.

how can you resist when you can get a 4lb laptop for $750 and a 20" lcd for $507? Dell quality and prices are hard to match.

Dell LCDs are second to none. I've got 2 myself

I'm not very impressed by their desktop parts though.

I recommended that 5 of my friends buy them about 18 months ago.

Two are running fine
One had a hard drive crash,
One of them had the power supply pop, and another one simply doesn't work anymore (Slowly died, took about half an hour between plugging it in and being able to turn the computer on before it stopped working).

I can't even get the PSU to start by manually shorting out the start signal now.

2 for 5 isn't that great of a record IMO

I've got 2 desktop units in my office that I have had for just about 3 years now and have had no problem with either of them. I will say they could use a little bit of product improvement on their D series laptops.

Please?

Used a company provided Dell Laptop for years, it was a great machine.

I own Inspiron 1100, Poweredge 400SC 2.26 P4, Poweredge 400SC P4 2.8HT, Poweredge SC420 2.8HT.

I used to build all my PC's but it's hard to build a unit that equals the Poweredge for less, plus these have a year warrenty to boot!

ah yes, corporate whoring at it's best. If you can't make a superior product, simply flood the market and sell your soul.
