I would tend to disagree. They offer the cheapest rigs. You can get a home desktop with an LCD for less than the price many people here paid for their LCD. Cheaper than you could build too. This is great for your average consumer that needs a computer, it's a home appliance you just have to have these days. They are solid machines, even the home desktops. I have one sitting next to me that is under full load 24/7 doing F@H, and it was my gaming rig for 2 years. It runs like a champ still, never any problems. I would still recommend them to anyone. Only problem is their support is in India, so good luck talking to them.

I've been building PCs and servers since 1995 but I wouldn't shy away from recommending a Dell (I would not recommend Sony though). The main reasons? Price and ubiquity. Dell's machines are super cheap and most a very well-built. Yes, sometimes they have systems where many parts have limitations but they should net you $200-$300 less than any other vendor's system while remaining extremely competitive with the cost of a custom-built system. As a computer consultant, I'd rather point people to a Dell and let Dell deal with their problems as opposed to having every little problems directed to me.

My main rig is still a custom-built but more and more machines in my home network are being replaced by Dell. The same goes for many of my company's servers and workstations. Standardization reduces headaches and it is especially enticing if you could shave some costs off the hardware so you can spend more on other things.

Here's a couple of benchmarks from my $300 Dell SC420 (aka headless box for use at home):
RAID0 - 2x160GB SATA Drives
Memory benchmark
CPU Arithmetic Benchmark
And just for the heck of it, here's the benchmark results from my main computer. It's actually slower than my $300 SC420!!!

Yes, yes they do. We have a few Precision 3x0 series workstations hooked up to research equipments. 3 year worry free on-site warranty.

Nothing exists except for Dells and Macs, and no one uses real OSes.

I'm now in the hunt for a Dell or HP hot deal. All I need is the box, no monitor, LCD or otherwise. It's got to have AGP or PCI Express slot. I'm in love with the ASUS Q-Fan technology in the Pavilion's Asus boards. Dells are nice and quiet too, but I think HP has the edge.

Can I snag a box for under $400.00 shipped by mid March? Anybody think it could be built for less, including the OS?

no

poweredge may be the way to go, but that is only an x8 slot. 4700 deals are your best bet

Here are some reasons, from the last year:

1) Their small form factor PCs, we've had at least 25 pass through our hands, every single one of them has a burned out motherboard/processor because they cannot cool them properly. After several calls with their engineers, they basically would never admit to the problem being on their end. Oh well, they're the ones sending replacement parts to me every week for them

2) The video cards based on NV chipsets stop producing digital signal after a random amount of time on all their GX260's and GX270's. I worked for over 3 months with dell engineers who admitted that there was a widespread problem after I personally called in over 50 different cases of this. Their 'fix' worked about 1 in 6 times (and also took them 2 months to produce) and the other times new cards had to be set in place

3) Their smaller tower versions of the optiplex series have random leaking capacitors and power supply problems. I personally just replaced over 10 machines all from the same cluster, all with leaking caps. Their wonderful CS also would not let me give her the 10 service tags at once, had to do them individually, over two hours wasted on the phone.

4) The power supplies in the GX280's randomly crap out for no reason, at least 20 in the last 3 months.

5) Their dimension series is a joke, I won't even bother commenting on those.

6) Their laptops, some much better than others, are surprisingly error free, aside from the dead complete POS hard drives they ship with and the random overheating and shutting off after only being on for 5 minutes.

I could go on, but it makes me depressed just thinking about it. My job isn't primarily working with hardware so I'm sure the hardware guys could go on and on as well. I deal mainly with computer repair and building/support and OS/networking.

edit: And for my boy Zim, I would not recommend buying a PC from anywhere like HP, gateway, dell, etc. Find a local computer shop, research prices on your own, or find a friend that knows how to build them and BUILD YOUR OWN. You cannot find a big place that puts good hardware in their PCs anymore, if I've learned anything in the last 2 years it's that simple fact.

I also work on just about everything dell makes and i have to disagree with you. Dell makes the best servers on the market, and their work stations are trouble free.

I also have no problems with their support. we spend the extra money and get the 4 hour response for parts and have never had a problem getting a new hard drive when they fail.

edit** i just looked at my spreadsheet that i put all the service tags witht he computer name on and we have just over 500 dell systems. about 80 of them are poweredge servers.
