Is it bad to replace a meal with a protein shake? Many mornings I don't have time to make a decent breakfast, so I just have a shake. I assume it is better than nothing. My shake includes a cup of 2% milk, a heaping scoop of Optimum 100% whey double choc, and a banana blended.

I am also pretty hungry when I get off work around 5:30 so I have a shake then so I don't eat dinner too early. I usually work out after having this shake, then eat dinner a few hours later. I know i'm not getting the 1g/lb of my weight, but I figure it is better than nothing.

I currently am 6'1 and weigh 175 pounds, do I really need to take 175g of protein in a day? The only time I have done that was when I had a shake for breakfast(40g), 20g in my lunch burritos, shake after work(40g), chicken breast for dinner with a glass of milk(40g), and another shake before bed(40g). That came out to 180g and I was really full. I can't see myself doing that daily.

What's your goal?

To gain strength and be fit, my weight doesn't really concern me. I got my first desk job after college about a year and a half ago and have gained about 15 pounds since. Starting about 2 months ago I began working out, running, and eating better along with taking protein. So far my weight has stayed the same at 175, but I have made pretty good gains in my lifting(I have pretty much stopped running sadly, but I was making gains there too) and I think I have probably replaced a good 5-10 pounds of fat with muscle. I still have a ways to go to be as fit as I would like.

I know I should be doing cardio, but I just don't have the time or the drive with it being dark when I get off work. I have a weight bench at home so I don't have a gym membership. But I do have a few roommates who I have been working out with, so that helps a lot.

You need cardio. But really for doing what you are you don't necessarily need quite that much protein. It isn't going to hurt you but it may not be all that beneficial either. Remember when you have a protein shake as a meal replacement you're just using the protein for energy. It's not helping your muscles. You need to eat full meals and then have protein in addition to that.

How much should one be working out to start taking protein supplements, and how intense of workouts? A couple months ago I started doing the pushups, situps, running thing to get my body used to the exercise, and starting last week I'm doing weights and working out more often. Weights 3 days a week after work before dinner, 15-20 minute workouts Mon-Fri in the morning before I hop in the shower (basically just to get the blood pumping and wake me up), and running 3-4 days a week. This enough to where I'll notice the benefits of protein shakes, etc.?

I need something between dinner and bed though to add more calories, and I dont really want to drink another shake.

Any reasonably healty, high calorie snack suggestions?

Thanks!

cottage cheese
mixed nuts
natural peanut butter
tuna
olive oil

These are all things I eat close to bedtime. Ideally you want things that take a long time to digest, since you are about to go for several hours without sleeping.

BTW, I would recommend the following link to anyone reading this thread:

Nice thread. Another thing to add is that if you really want to bulk up don't just work out your upper body. . .those legs and lower body matter too. when you work out your lower body it gets your testosterone levels up, thus enabling greater muscle growth.

perhaps make another thread on Work Out pointers, I'm a noobie when it comes to bodybuilding so a thread on such an topic from an experienced person would totally help me out (and i think it would help out many at AT too)

Roasted, Unsalted Nuts + Cottage Cheese? Or a tablespoon of All-Natty PB + Fat Free Cottage Cheese (no need to mix). That's probably good for 3-350 calories. You could add a piece of 100% Wheat Bread for more kcals if you want.

I'd take just boost my protein intake before going the supplement route. Go eat some Tuna, Chicken, lean cuts of Beef, stuff like that.

Oats baby, steel cut oats. Mix them with everything or eat them by the handful, they are one of the most calorie dense foods you can buy, and they are healthy.

Thanks :0

This is turning into a fitness thread (not to be unexpected). You're right on track in that you want to focus on cardo. But lifting with a friend a couple times a week is a very good idea. It'll help firm your muscles up so they stand out more as you lose the fat. While just doing cardio you probably don't need to take much extra protein since you don't have any extreme muscle mass you're trying to preserve. Once you start lifting it won't hurt to have a shake right after you lift, and more throughout the day if you get more serious.

bignateyk nuts (buy bulk at the store), cottage cheese, yogurt, bagels+cream cheese.

And yes squats are huge for bulking up. Along with deadlifts and other big compound exercises.

hey SVT....can you put that vid of you "powerlifting" in all your threads as a DISCLAIMER, so that everyone can see all your "rolls". you still haven't learned that ppl don't wanna end up looking like you, they lift and workout to look GOOD. instead you overcomplicate the issue in all ur threads. i just recommend ppl see what the OP looks like before taking his nutritional/working out information..lol

The information he gave is correct, regardless of what he looks like. His information applies to anyone trying to gain muscle and reduce fat, not just body builders. Troll elsewhere...

There are many people who have a hard time gaining muscle, and his advice certainly isnt overcomplicating anything. The bottom line is to eat protein, and hes just explaining different types, which many people are unsure about.

oh, and back on topic, where can I buy steel cut oats? I have looked at some grocery stores around me and all I can find are quaker oats.

maybe you don't wanna see his "vid". You will probly insist on NEVER taking protein then, and that wouldn't be helpful

I use the Optimum Nutrition's Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein. Get it in the 10 lb bags. I commute to work on bike. I have a scoop w/ water when i get there and one w/ water when i get home. For dinner i mix w/ milk for my drink. During the weekend a good 'dessert' i do is cottage cheese and fat free yogurt. Publix has some really good flavors in their fat free line.

Netrition has them, but they're not nearly as cheap as the bulk containers of Quaker. I did some research on the topic, and concluded the price of real steel cut oats wasn't worth it for me, but each to his own.

Cytogainer is pretty solid to put on some weight, but next time try looking at Mass Meal, or Universal's Gainer. They taste great and have the best ingredient profiles out there with limted maltodextrin. Or you could make homemade ones which would nutritionally be better, but time consuming.
