The next gen cards were all going to be mining monsters. Under other circumstances (crypto boom), would Gamers be getting GPUs as powerful as this next generation will be? I think Nvidia and AMD would have held back....reserved the some of that performance boost to sell through current gen inventory. Now they face a near future where the low end cards will perform as well as the current gen's flagships. When is the last time we had a jump in performance like that?
I believe the boost was to entice the crypto miners into the same buying frenzy of next gen cards as they had been over the current... and that bet is sinking them now. Nvidia is slowing down the 4000 series release, but at the cost of giving up market share to AMD. Intel, late to the game, is just plain sad.... and I haven't forgiven them for the VROC scam, so I'll take some measure of pleasure in their misfortunes (I'd still like to see them be a player, though, just to keep AMD and Radeon more honest). When those next gen cards finally hit, it will be a bounty for us gamers.
Understanding the market, it's fine to spend $200~300 for a decent performing card if it is needed. Don't FOMO over the current price cuts, though, because the high end cards will be getting very cheap in the next 6 months. A flood will be hitting in September when Etherium changes to proof of stake. Nvidia and AMD are trying to get out ahead of it to get buyers for their top of the line cards, but TWO. WEEKS. INTO. SEPTEMBER. Those flagships will be going cheap.
Anyway, I have no regrets buying a 6600 and 6600XT in the past few months (both at around $300), and my 3070 in my main system will tide me over until the 4080 comes out. If you need a card with 2060 performance NOW, you can't really go wrong for around $210. Better than crippled mobile GPUs masquerading as desktop GPUs (6400/6500XT).
