I know the news has been floating around on a few forums, but no one has officially started a thread on this yet under the 'Hot Deals' section. This is a free replacement, and I would call in for more details (phone number at the link below). By all means, this a hot deal for all eVGA 680i owners.

FWIW - Newegg has some nice combo deals for the TR and a C2D that have a $50 Rebate from eVGA - bringing your net cost for the board down to $170. RMA it before its even out of the box!

Sorry for the questions but this is the first I've heard of this. I bought the 680i days after its release. Will it not work with quad core chips?
So I can just exchange my board for a new one that will????

Thanks.

I logged in but all it shows is my video card. I thought I registered my 680i board as well. I may call them tomorrwo but would that mean that I am out of luck since I didn't register it?

I am assuming as long as you have your receipt/invoice of the original purchase, you should be fine. I am in the same boat - I'll call them up tomorrow and find out. One of my friends was able to exchange it, but then he is a regular visitor/contributor on the eVGA forums.

Please post your findings...

I did finally manage to figure it out.

I went to this link :
http://evga.com/support/680i_fsb.asp

Entered my Serial # and then when I went back to the product page there was the
?Replace my 680i? button.
Filled out the info and it says "Awaiting Approval" now so we'll see.

so what if we are running dual core? swap for future protection or just leave it alone?

You can swap it in the future AFAIK. I think they require some type of model of CPU before you can replace it.

The original board does work with quad cores. This is just a fix to quad core overclocking, so if you don't overclock past 1300 FSB, theres no point in getting it replaced.

Is EVGA the only one doing this? Are EVGA's the only boards with the limit? If not then thats nice of them (and costly) for replacing NVIDIA's mistake... much like the 7900GT fix.

I've emailed them and asked in their forums but no response yet.

they will send you the new one and you have 14 days (I think) to get the old one back to them. They do have to get a cc# in case you don't send the old one back to them.

can anybody talk about the quality of this 680i board. Anandtech did not review this yet...or at least a comparison between this and other brands like asus....

Given the fact that they're supposedly willing to do an exchange, I'm guessing the issue is correctable through product alteration. eVGA will probably make up most of the loss retooling the boards to current spec and putting them out to OEMs for a discount.

And what if there is no "Replace My 680i" button in your My Products? Does that mean my board was made after the fix?

I had to upload a scanned image of my receipt: they apporved the RMA after I did this. I think you should receive an email from them asking you to fax your receipt, mail it in, or upload a scanned image.

Overall it's a good experience - they provide the shipping label, multiple RMA confirmation emails, etc. I think I am starting to like their customer service!

By the way, we'll have to pay for the courier charges when returning the older board - not a big deal by any means.

I did receive multiple emails from them, and one of them asked explicitly to upload the image (or mail or fax) of a copy of the receipt. Also, if you go to your members area, and look under 'My Products,' you should be able to see the 'Upload Invoice' option once the RMA has been "approved." It is confusing because they send you an email that "approves" the RMA, but IT IS NOT official until they see the receipt. Once they get the receipt, you'll receive more emails from them, and one of them will explicitly ask you to enter your CC information - your RMA process is finalized only after this phase.
