Okay, I just upgraded from a GTX to two GTs.
However, my first impressions of these cards are nothing but their loud fan noises.
Even only having one of these pluged in, my computer at least 3 times noiser then my old GTX KO.
I think, in order to silent them, I would need a Zalman cooler or the AC-Silencer, but I wouldn't be able to use them because they are in SLI config.
What other options do I have?

wow...GTX wasn't enough for you?

either way...sick rig...but you'll need the space to cool it...weird situation...plus SLI doesn't offer that much more in terms of FPS and whatnot...

The GTX KO wasn't quite enough for BF2 @ 1920x1200.
But I am not worrying about F.E.A.R. because it still laggy with SLI GTs with shadows medium, softshadows off.

What's your overall impression of the cards vs. your 7800GTX? I just made the same switch but I haven't gotten the cards installed yet.

I'm not sure why either of those cards would be any louder than your 7800GTX. Do you have a program to check what rpm or percentage the fans are running at? I know the program exists but I can't remember of the top of my head what it's called. If rpm seems normal than I suggest some aftermarket coolers if noise is an issue for you.

The GT's fan is smaller than the GTX, and runs at a higher rpm, thus the increased noise. In one review i read, its a good 10db louder unfortunately. I have two BFG 7800GT's in SLI and they were very annoying, so i put NV5 silencers on both. Now they are literally silent, and dropped my case temps a good amount. You may need to have an Asus board to fit both with this cooler installed though.

This is my second time trying SLI out. I had a 6800SLI system for a while before I went with the 7800GTX KO. As of now, my impression of SLI isn't that good, there is no way that it's giving double the performance besides in benchmarks like game demos & 3dmark.
It's true that these SLI GTs significantly increase maximum fps, but if it's a situation where my GTX KO would gives low framerates, then the SLI GTs would gives the same low fps.

SLIed GTX's cannot run FEAR at max settings and resolution. YOur gonna have to wait a while.

I can't say positively, the Zalman VF700 seems like it might fit in an SLI setup. In the "silent" mode, it's definitely silent.

Also it doesn't idle as well as a 7800GTX either as it only has two speed settings instead of four (IIRC).

Has anyone tried the Zalman in a DFI board?

Just looking at the board, it doesn't seem like a dual slot cooler would fit in the first x16 slot, but I'm not positive.

thats strange, i have 2 7800gts....and together they are quieter than my old 6800GT. sure theyre loud on start up....that lasts all of 30 seconds. once in windows its suprisingly quiet

i have XFX cards mind, but they are factory overclocked to 450mhz

Toattet:

Arctic Cooling will have the Accelero in Feb. I emailed them and 2 of them will fit on non-Asus SLI slots. I wished all SLI board makers Had Asus's wisdom in putting two slots in between the SLI slots instead of one like the majority of boards out there.

Also, Zalman will have a lower profile GPU cooler out soon.

I just got an evga 6600GT for my office comp and it's very loud too...has a whiney 60mm fan. Evga may not be so good. I notice they only have a one years warranty compared to other places "lifetime". No biggie I guess but I actually plan to keep this box about 3 more years or even forever since all it does is my word , house plans, and holds all pertenant data with regaurd to my life. Basicially it's the machine I can't have ever go down reghost - rebuild etc. So I'm a little concerned they don't stand behind product more and that fan will go out I have no doubt. Those whinny 60s never last.

Incorrect - they have a one year warranty of non-retail products that rises to two years after you register. On retail parts its lifetime and covers overclocking.

i noticed that evga does not turn on the thermistor stuff on a lot of their cards. my evga 6600gt that i had, you had to hack the bios to turn it on so that it would run the fan at a lower speed in 2d mode.

i dont think you can do anything about it in 3d, but you might want to think about hacking your bios, or using riva tuner if thermistor is enabled. sometimes they enable the thermistor but they still set it to run the fans at 100% in 2d mode. you coudl set it to like 30% and be fine probably.
