wondering if this would be as good as getting a 8800gt.

this is a good card for that price... a gt is going to cost a chunk more, but has more memory which lets u go with a bigger lcd (1650x1080) and get good performance...

i built a couple 'bargain' gaming systems with 1440x900 lcd's and x2's and 2gb ram and they are great...

At that price I would think the 256 GT or a 512 3800 series ATI card would be a better purchase. The 3850 would leave you with nearly the same performance and a 3870 would probably-in some games- give you outright better performance for less money.

The ATI 3850 is the better buy. You can get a Visiontek 3850 256MB card on newegg for $169 that is almost as fast as the 8800GTS. I have the 8800GTS 320MB and my brother has the 3850 256MB card and i can't tell any difference between them in performance.

You also get UVD high definition processing on the 3850 that is lacking on the 8800GTS card.

I run Crysis at 50% medium/50% high settings @ 1920 X 1080 and average 40FPS with a E6750/4GB/8800GTS. The ATI 3850 may be faster but people should know the GTS is acceptable at higher than 1650 X 1080, though maybe not with AA turned up.

I'd rather spend the extra money and not have to deal with rebates and get a 8800GT 256MB/512MB or the HD3870.
