IMHO, only if you want the 512 meg and/or bigger stock cooler. You can always vMod your currently card to 1.4v on the core and get GTX performance.

Thanx

It's way better than paying for the new card's cost. What else can you ask for? More discount from eVGA? It is not a volumed e-retailer like N/E in order to give you that discount.

Why is it way better? In effect you are just buying the later card at full MSRP, the only benefit getting a 'loaner' card in the meantime.

For example, say you buy this 7900GTO for $240 now, and then the 8xxx comes out with MSRP list of $499, but you could get it at a great sale for $349.

Then you have to buy the new card for the $499 price, getting back the $240 you spent on the 7900 GTO - you spent $150 for getting a 7900 GTO loaner for a little while.

I'd probably rather buy the new card on sale than get a not so free loaner.

It's a fact that graphics cards depreciate really fast.
If you do not need a graphics card, I don't think anyone is suggesting that you get this one, or any other one.

But, those who do need an upgrade, take advantage of this opportunity to upgrade to this.

Why would someone want to do that?
Do your own research prior to do the step-up, always.

In my last step-up, I paid a total of $60 delta, including $10 shipping from a 7800gtx ($449 paid) to 7900gtx ($499 MSRP) step-up last March.

Tigerdirect.ca is selling this card for $259.97Cdn... Which works out to be a pretty good buy for us Canadians.

and also $499.99 video cars are never onsale for $350.00 on release, so that senario is not going to happen, it usually takes 3 months for the first price drop., and to get full value from a used video card, even if it is only 3 months old, is a great deal.

I have done the step-up twice, and got awesome deals both times.

I got a 7900GT for $150.00 because of the $150.00 REBATE I GOT ON THE 6800 I TRADED IN.

My core can clock to around 715MHz or so. Memory "only" in the 700MHz range - forgot exactly, around 760MHz maybe? It's in my gaming rig in my trunk - got back from the LAN party at about 5am this morning. Used it for around 8 hours of gaming at those speeds, and my Opteron 144 at 2.7GHz. All on a 300W PSU.

I just ran a few quick benchies. Keep in mind, I have had no time to tweak any settings. I finished installing Windows on my new rig, and benched right away.

3DMark2006:

6638 3DMarks
SM2.0 = 2730
HDR/SM3.0 = 2622
CPU = 2542

It seems we agree on the facts - you're buying the uupgraded card at full list and the only benefit is a 'loaner' card for up to three months before you do - and it's just a matter of opinion how useful that is. I'm glad the people who like the program have it.

What BIOS version do you have? In case you haven't seen, most people who cannot reach GTX memory speeds have a newer BIOS (.13). Downgrading to an older one (.08) fixes the problem.

I get almost exactly the same results.

711 on the core and 784 on the memory useing Riva Tuner to autoclock it. I am on a Antec True 550watt PSU though.

Using tweaksrus 92.91 (x64), I was able to do 700/820 (stable enough to pass 3dmark06 twice w/o freezez or BSOD). Backing off to 690/800 eversince for daily usage or gaming.

I was able to overclock to 710/825 with Riva Tuner and got it stable. For those using Riva Tuner, how do you get it to apply the settings on windows startup? I click the check box to do so, but every time after a reboot I have to manually start Riva Tuner up again, which starts up with the original default setting.

Rivatuner is extremely powerful. I like its temperature graph.
ATITool is much simpler to set up. The only shortcoming of ATITool, in my opinion, is that its temperature graph does not have as much resolution.

One word: Great
Yoiu must have E6600 or better? My SM2 & SM3 are about the same as yours, except the cpu which is around 1700.

Main system components:

Asus P5W-DH Deluxe
Intel E6600
OCZ Gold XTC PC2-6400 (2 x 1GB)
eVGA 7900GTO (700/800)

I haven't really pushed my CPU yet ... just basic overclocking from 266 -> 320, keeping RAM at DDR2-800. Timings are ridiculously messy. I've only had an hour or two to fiddle with it.

I was suprised that my PC Power & Cooling 510 Deluxe only had a 20-pin ATX cable. Oh well, it works without the additional 4-pin adapter. The GTO is powered by two unused Molex leads.
