Thanks. Maybe that's what pushes me over the edge, LOL.

BTW, from the Tiger Direct page...
This product has a Lifetime Warranty.
This warranty is provided by EVGA.

EDIT: Okay, ordered one. Shipping's kind of steep, but $262 out the door isn't too bad overall, plus rebate on it (yeah yeah, a TD rebate ).

ARRRGGGHHHHH!! That pushed me over the edge as well. I was a fence sitter from the very beginning, but cannot resist any longer. I have no self-control and my credit card is taking another pounding.

http://www.evga.com/support/lifetime/
from the Step-Up FAQ:

  • Q: What is the warranty period after Step-Up?

A: Your new warranty will depend on the date of the invoice of your Step-Up card:
    • Before Jan 1, 2005 - standard one year warranty
    • On or after Jan 1, 2005 and before Jun 22, 2005 - 1+1 Warranty (standard one year + one year with registration)
    • On or after Jun 22, 2005 - Lifetime Warranty for products ending in AX, all other part numbers will be covered under 1+1 Warranty
This is almost starting to sound as if eVGA has drastically cut their warranty coverage on many cards--except for those ending in "AX"--and that their website may be out-of-date on most pages. That would explain the comments you got over the phone, Navid, from that eVGA rep. Have you gotten an email response yet?

Good catch.
No, I have not got a response to my email to eVGA yet.
But, the thread on their forum is more official than an email I think.

eVGA press release

The 1 + 1 warranty was their "old" warranty. eVGA didn't have a lifetime warranty until last year. Smart move as it is now one of the most recommended brands.

TD still appears to be in stock, at least, I received no notification of a back order when I just ordered my two.

My credit card hates this forum, by the way.

I am going to be ultra pissed if they delay my order. In my confirmation, I see no back-order info, and I paid for 2 day shipping.

Has anyone gotten shipping confirmation from ZZF? I ordered on Friday. My credit card has been charged (or at least has the amount held), but the status is still "processing".

I just went to ZZF to cancel so I could order from Newegg. My status is still "processing", but now the cancel link is gone. Figures.

re: DX10
I dont know why everyone is talking about DX10. The main improvement that MS is touting is that they reduced the software latency in the DX10 dll files. An improvement like that applies to ANY card, not just DX10 feature cards.

The only other feature I've found is something about better shaders. If its anything like the step from shader 2 to shader 3, its way over hyped. And I'm not counting the exaggerated silly screenshots from farcry that were misleading in the extreme.

It will be just like DX9, even very old cards like GF3 have no problems running under DX9 they just don't support some of the later DX9 features.

that's a real shocker, to hear that eVGA only warrants this card for two years. And it's doubly baffling that eVGA reps would vouch for that skimpy warranty over the phone, when their website explicity states the card has a lifetime warranty:
  • "Lifetime Warranty is for all retail Graphics Card and Mainboard products ending in the part numbers AR, AX, BR*, BX*, DR, DX, FR, FX, SG, SL, or S2."

    http://www.evga.com/articles/327.asp

One possability is that ZZF was lazy and just put the 1+1 warranty because that's what EVGA gives all its products EXCEPT the ones listed above. It just so happens, that the 7900 GTO is one of the ones listed above which means it has lifetime.

Since the warranty is through EVGA anyway, I'd take thier word about it being a lifetime warranty over ZZF's incorrect information about a 1+1 warranty anyday.

I got smoked by TD on a rebate, so I didn't even factor that in when I ordered.

Not stock, surely, but the idea here is that the memory is severely underclocked and can be overclocked with ease. The problem is, knowing the industry, they are probably using memory that didn't pass at higher frequencies on these boards.

But, I hope I'm wrong and am in for 2 from Newegg.

(Too much  for my own good. )

There are differances between the way you would bin a memory card and the way you sell certain spec chips.

In this case the only verified report of memory chips on the GTO that I've seen is that they are at 1.1ns which is plenty fast enough to "overclock" to GTX speeds. If anyone wants to volunteer to remove thier heatsink and take a look at the memory chips, feel free
A manufacture of memory chips wouldn't sell chips that can't reach the speeds that they are specced for. If you are a card manufacture, and buying and paying for 1.1ns chips, you'd better get chips that are actually 1.1ns capable.
Now, EVGA's specs PDF say they are 1.2ns chips, which are a bit slower, but they should still have fairly decent room to overclock. Problems would happen though if the chips were 1.4ns specs, those are too slow to overclock to GTX specs unless you get really lucky.

In other words, with 1.1ns chips and similar, you aren't really "overclocking" the memory you are still within the range they officially support. With slower chips like 1.4ns you ARE taking a chance since the memory doesn't support those kinda speeds.

Speed breakdowns:
1.1ns should hit around 900 megahertz
1.2ns should hit around 800 megahertz
1.4ns should hit around 700 megahertz
These numbers are approximate, and I didn't take into account any extra cycles for using the memory (like system memory you'd see 2-2-5-8 or similar, those are all cycles that are used for a read or a write). But I did leave a bit of wiggle room. Also remember DDR is twice the speed effectivly.
And if you look at EVGA's specs sheets for instance, they use a 1.2ns chips in a GTX card with memory clocked at 800 mhz. They use 1.4ns chips on a 7950GT that has 725mhz memory.

Now look at the spec sheet again for the GTO. 1.2ns chips for the GTO but the memory clock is only 660mhz.

By EVGA's official specs, the memory is the EXACT SAME STUFF as the GTX!! So if they ship any other spec memory, they are violating thier specs. So I really dont think there's a need to worry about the memory you will receive.
