Why theres not enough ram for quad support anyway, it would be useless.
Why would you use 4 gtx460's for 1080p?
You make a lot of assumptions.

1. Obviously if they were making a dual-GPU board suited for Quad they'd offer adequate memory.

2. Where did I say I was using 1080p (Or even one display for that matter)?

Do they actually officially support it? I always thought that they didn't, even though it works.
They have supported quad sli since their first dual gpu cards/ 7950x2 .
edit : If you read that old story, that might be where you saw mentioned, unofficial/ official . Early on, they did not want amateur end users assembling quad sli . They wanted it to be bought as part of a boutique high end PC.

Well, well. You guys are, of course, absolutely right. I never bothered looking and thought that I remembered official support for only up to 3 cards. Thanks, I learned something.

The 4th card generally just acts as a space heater since quad scaling (from both companies) has been pretty non-existent till the 6990.

Thats not true at all.
The 4th gpu just sits there because there is no cpu fast enough to feed it.

Here is some proof for you. Quad sli is hard to find benches for sorry. I think you need a highly clocked i7 @ 4.8 or more.

This guy is showing 4 gtx580, all with over 90% gpu usage. He has one hell of a cpu though.

Just for kicks here is surround with 4 way gtx580's in sli , with Metro, Stalker, heaven 2.1 and Aliens vs predator.

The fact that the 6990 scales decently in quadfire pretty much disproves your claim that it is all about cpu bottlenecking.

Or that AMD's driver are better at using the CPU.

Showing 90% GPU usage is one thing, we want to know the scaling. Even in the 5870 days. QUADCROSSFIRE scaled better than quad SLI, but it was still poor, the 6990 shows how its done.

EDIT: Where is that 3GB palit, I don't see it on the egg.

It has an SLI finger but according to Jacob, Quad SLI is not supported. SLI finger was part of PCB design (not removed) prior to going into production.

WAIT!!! No Quad SLI? FAIL!!!!!! There's no point then to buy this card

No benches there, a couple forum posts ? most showing very poor scaling ? and a few youtube videos ?

Quad SLI does not scale well you were saying this yourself, now that AMD has good Quad scaling with 6990, suddenly nv has good quad scaling ?

Why does it need to be argued ?

I don't think no quad was fail due to the 1gb of memory.
But a dual gtx460 and a single gtx460 for some tri sli might be worth it.

Possibly more of my SLI ignorance showing her, but can you SLI a dual GPU card with a single one? Could the 295 be SLI'd with a 275, for instance?

Nope, SLI is very strict in the regard. They must be identical cards. Same ram, same clocks, same GPUs.

The point is its not marketed towards those who want/can use SLI. Its marketed for those who just want a upgrade to something better in a single slot.

I agree. It's a single card that will give you X performance. I looked at a [H] comparison of 460SLI and the 580. They were pretty much even. That was stock clocks and the 2win version will have a slight O/C, but unless it's quite a bit cheaper, I think most would go for the single GPU solution.

edit: NVMind,
This new 2win card should get good reviews pawning the 5970. Which was just held up against the gtx 580 at its launch with a uncharacteristic price drop

Do we really need to derail this thread to hear about crossfire scaling ONLY @ extreme multi-monitor resolutions with 2 - 720.00 video cards.

And is now pretty much non-existent, with the only version selling on Newegg priced higher than the 6990.

Well to be fair it was not relevant in Dec at the gtx 580 launch either, but thats history. They are both 40nm parts with 1gb dual gpu's, they will be compared.
