I was wondering, if I bought an 8800GT now for 200 how much would I have to pay if I traded up to a 9800GT when it comes out?

Whatever price you bought it for. So let's say the 9800 is on sale for $400. You participate in the buyback program and eVGA sells you the 9800 for $200.
A couple of issues that you need to know first.
1) They require you to ship your video card to them first. It took me about 2 weeks to get my 8800GTS from them. So have a backup video card ready.
2) You only have 90 days from date of purchase to participate in the buyback program.

Except EVGA can dictate what cards are released when for the step up program and it doesn't coincide with market availability, theres a chance you wont get to trade up to the card you want.

But it wont be anything ridiculous, like 2 months after its available on the market, right?

Of course, the price of the 8800GT shot *up* for months after launch... When it was available.Originally posted by: rfadream
you got to remember though that the price that evga sets for the new cards that come out is the msrp price, not a price you might find at newegg, clubit or other popular online stores. if nvidia puts the msrp at $599 it won't matter if you wait 2 months and 2 weeks and the price of a 9800gtx falls to $400. you will still have to pay $599-$199=$400 to step up.

Just a random thought: do they trade you to the same -A(x) version? If it is your intent to ultimately get a next-gen card, does it make any difference if the card you get now is -A3 (~$30 more for 'free' crysis) and then trade up to -AR (no bundle) or some other? The cost of the game then really is just loaning them the $30 for a couple of months. Or do you have to send the game back with the original card?
# The participant's trade-in video graphics adapter must be fully functional, be in its original packaging, with all CDs, and manuals, and be in resalable condition. Should these conditions not be met, the applicable value of the trade-in card will be reduced by 15%, with the difference paid by the participant in order to proceed with the Step-Up? Process.
* An exception to this rule is if the original product came with a promotional game. This is deemed as a gift and does not need to be returned with the trade-in card. The participant will not be charged for not returning a bundled game.
