I was wondering, if I bought an 8800GT now for 200 how much would I have to pay if I traded up to a 9800GT when it comes out?

Whatever price you bought it for. So let's say the 9800 is on sale for $400. You participate in the buyback program and eVGA sells you the 9800 for $200.

A couple of issues that you need to know first.

1) They require you to ship your video card to them first. It took me about 2 weeks to get my 8800GTS from them. So have a backup video card ready.
2) You only have 90 days from date of purchase to participate in the buyback program.

So if I bought the 8800 for $200 now, and the 9800 is released in, lets say, a couple weeks, for $400, and then I traded up, I would have to pay $200 for it?

Except EVGA can dictate what cards are released when for the step up program and it doesn't coincide with market availability, theres a chance you wont get to trade up to the card you want.

But it wont be anything ridiculous, like 2 months after its available on the market, right?

My experience has been very good. I stepped up to the 7900GT from the 7800GT, which was incredibly popular around here due to basically no increase in price. eVGA offered a step-up on launch day and then had people ship their cards as replacements arrived. Top notch experience all around.

Actually it comes out on the day the product is released. If they don't have any in stock you'll be placed in a queue and be notified when they have a card for you. EVGA has a stock for Stepups so I am sure there will be some available.

I did a step up from a 7900GS to a 8800GTS 640 nearish to 8800 launch. They usually dont offer the OC variants of any of the cards so expect to see the vanilla versions of the upcoming cards. The experience was very painless and customer support is pretty good. Since I did purchase fairly close to launch the retail price for the G80s was pretty close to what newegg and the rest were selling em for so the value was pretty good.

you got to remember though that the price that evga sets for the new cards that come out is the msrp price, not a price you might find at newegg, clubit or other popular online stores. if nvidia puts the msrp at $599 it won't matter if you wait 2 months and 2 weeks and the price of a 9800gtx falls to $400. you will still have to pay $599-$199=$400 to step up.

i am one of the people who stepped up my 7800gt to 7900gt btw and that was a great experience because nvidia set the msrp at $299 so i stepped up for barely $20. but take a look at evga's site and the prices they are listing for 8800gt and 8800gts, even the older 640mb gts. the price they are asking is no where near what the market is selling them for atm.

My Step Up was the 7800GT bundled with the eVGA NF41 board for $349, so I paid more but my Step Up was now worth more in the long run. And, like sunrise, I traded up to the 7900GT for a grand total of $12. When that 7900GT started to crap out last year, I RMA'd it back in, receiving a 7950gx2 in exchange. I thought, holy crap, nice !! What I didn't expect was for them to put the new card back in the Step Up program, soI have about 9 days left to take advantage of it. I will probably miss out on the 9800gx2, but at least I can pick up an 8800GT for another $12.

The Step Up is a nice setup given the proper time period you buy a card, and then add in the warranty and 'extra' Step Up, and I'm not complaining.

wow i'm almost certain that evga wasn't intending to give you a second stepup option for your rma'd 7950gx2. nice catch on the unexpected bonus.

Of course, the price of the 8800GT shot *up* for months after launch... When it was available.

Step-up can net you a bargain, too.

ya i guess you have a point there. but that kind of situation seems to be the exception rather than the norm.

i think even nvidia was caught offguard by how powerful the 8800gt was compared to the 8800gts 320/640.

they were quick to correct that imbalance in the market by releasing the 8800gts 512 and the prices settled back down quite fast.

So let's look at newegg right now.

If I buy the EVGA SC for 244.99 it comes with a rebate of $30.00

will my stepup be 244.99 or 214.99?

Its what you pay for it, rebates do not factor into the equation unless it is an INSTANT rebate.

Just a random thought: do they trade you to the same -A(x) version? If it is your intent to ultimately get a next-gen card, does it make any difference if the card you get now is -A3 (~$30 more for 'free' crysis) and then trade up to -AR (no bundle) or some other? The cost of the game then really is just loaning them the $30 for a couple of months. Or do you have to send the game back with the original card?

# The participant's trade-in video graphics adapter must be fully functional, be in its original packaging, with all CDs, and manuals, and be in resalable condition. Should these conditions not be met, the applicable value of the trade-in card will be reduced by 15%, with the difference paid by the participant in order to proceed with the Step-Up? Process.

* An exception to this rule is if the original product came with a promotional game. This is deemed as a gift and does not need to be returned with the trade-in card. The participant will not be charged for not returning a bundled game.
