I hate to simply be a person who provides references to the works of others in response to questions such as these, but as I said in the other thread, this is a a HUGE subject and cannot be answered in a single post. I would strongly recommend you read the works of Lee Smolin, Sir Martin Rees, and others. Specifically, read this book, this book, and this book. They are not academic texts, but I'm assumining that's not what you're wanting. You might also want to look at the Usenet Physics FAQ for book references, explanations, etc. That should get you started.

Perhaps the reason we can not know what came before the big bang is because there IS no before. Time and space are intertwined, and when all of space is forced into a singularity, so is time.

In other words, theres no time before the big bang, because time itself didnt start to move until the big bang itself.

Then theres the theory that black holes contain universses, multiverses, each atom contains one etc.

Personally Im of the belief that a mere human being trying to comprehend reality at its all encompassing level is like trying to teach astrophysics to a squirrel. We are just animals, and like all animals, we have limitations. Including cognitive ones.

You come to ATOT for a scientific explanation? When looking for answers you have to consider your source, and I provided links above that are more than adequate for you to get your own answers. I believe people should SHOW you the means to derive an answer, so if you really want to understand then you'll have to permute the hierarchy of human knowledge that every other inquisitive mind has done.

I think the Big Bang is scientific hosh posh made up to appease non-believers.

Believing that God created man is scarier than thinking that a bunch of "masses" just happened to swirl around one day and boom! - a universe was created and then I guess the trees and plants and micro-organisms (or whatever it was scientists say created people) got together one day and decided they didn't want to be at the top of the food chain, so they somehow created a person.

Well how come the micro-organisms and plants and trees of this time (or whatever it was) aren't smart enough to have conjured up something like that again?

Maybe they are thinking of something bigger - like plotting to take over the world *raises pinky to side of lip*

You're right, acquiescing to the idea of something of omnipotence responsible for everything is much harder than actually trying to understand your origins. Your understanding is obviously very superficial, but if there is indeed a god I shall choose to appreciate it through the study of its creation.

It would be so much easier to simply say "God is responsible for everything" rather than torment myself with unabating curiosity.

I'll vouch for 3 roads to quantum gravity, just started reading it a few days ago. Maybe toss in Elegant Universe.
