Apparently, they haven't heard of speed bumps in your area. They gone nuts with them here. My old shortcut became useless.
Speed bumps and speed tables can play a role, but our engineering controls should start with best practices of simply shrinking the right of way. Narrower roads intrinsically lead people to slow down.

Yeah, let me tell you about all the times I've almost been hit by a car while running out walking my daughter to school because car drivers couldn't be bothered to look both ways or any ways. It's amazing how many people do right hand turns in neighborhoods without ever looking to the right. Doesn't matter how much high vis shit I wear when the driver never looks.
Sure both the driver and pedestrian should make eye contact so nobody should assume they are seen. however consequence for the pedestrian will be worse, so in the interest of self-preservation when I am a pedestrian I double take. yeah its not equitable.
I tell my kids all the time being on the roadway at your age is by far the thing that will take you out. Cars going 60 are an illusion of safety any impact at that speed is horrific, I know people permanently f'd up riding a bike and a door swings open on them, pedestrians hit in crosswalks its dangerous out there pay attention

I don't even rely on the eye contact thing: sometimes you can't really tell if you have made contact or if the person is just randomly looking around. It is dangerous out there, and sadly we don't really hold dangerous drivers responsible (like taking away licenses), we don't institute good engineering controls and automated enforcement to get people to slow down, and we don't have more pedestrian/bike friendly infrastructure, so people either make dangerous choices (like crossing at bad spots instead of walking thousands of feet out of the way to the nearest "safe" crossing), or they just become another person hopping in a car because they don't want to put up with the danger of being outside a vehicle.

Strangely for us it’s golf carts. Wife and I take a 2 mile round trip walk most days around our pond over to the nearby park and back.

A large percentage of people in our neighborhood have bought golf carts, 4 wheel ATV’s, or minibikes. They all let their underage teenagers drive them in public despite city ordinances requiring the driver to be licensed.

These kids drive them in streets and on the sidewalks. The path around the pond is only 8-15ft wide between the fences and a steep slope down to the water. Invariably some 14 year old will come flying up behind us with 5 friends in a gas powered ATV while walking this path and expect us to get out of the way.

Almost been hit that way or the kids have almost gone into the pond trying to turn around when we point out it’s illegal to have them on the side walks. (It’s actually a $500 fine if the cops catch them)

To top it off when my youngest was in kindergarten she lost a friend because the parents let their 8 year old drive the 5 yr old around in a golf cart and flipped it with cart falling on her friend. We’ve also seen some drunk adults scrapped off the road after plowing into a light post and a car accident after a 12 year old kid on a mini bike swerved into on coming traffic.

But hey these aren’t real cars so the don’t need seat belts, kids can drive them anywhere and it’s not like they’ll get hurt plowing into a 7000lb Silverado doing 30mph.

Yup I’m afraid for a neighbourhood kid. Owner of a escooter last year added electric go cart last week. He lets a young teen use them. Just carelessly buzzing around on the street. Lucky low traffic area. But go cart is extremely low. I’ve only seen it on security camera. Yet to see it in person. So unsure how visible it is when reversing out of driveway.

Sounds like you need to deploy some caltrops in the area.

Completely agree. Pedestrians need to always take every step possible to protect themselves. In neighborhoods I run on roads because the sidewalks suck, especially for running, but I've had to jump into yards many times from drivers not paying attention. I also always run on the left so I can see them coming.

Yeah, we have that issue too, luckily not so much on paths or sidewalk, but definitely in the streets. I always move to the sidewalk when I see a golf cart with a 10 year-old behind the wheel.
