Sometimes, but not that much. 15 years of a living and talking a certain way tends to become a hard to break habit.

I'm not ex-military.... furthest thing from it. I use military time and affirmative/negative frequently though.

Just curious, do you still use military lingo, even though you are a civilian?

Does having my watch set to military time count?

The 24-hour clock is the way to go. Europe uses it and so should the entire world, IMO. It would make things a lot easier. AM/PM is just lazy bullshit probably invented by lazy Americans (I'm not Googling it, so bite me) just to be different.

I even go out of my way to buy a 24-hour alarm clock just to not have to deal with "Is the "PM" LED on? What fciking time is it, really?" BS.

Seeing 0430 or 1630 on the clock instantly lets me know what time it is...and if I'm late for my shift or not.

I completely agree. 24-hour clocks are the only way to go.

lol yeah I'm not even proper military yet and I tend to use a lot of military lingo.
AROTC here. And maybe it's just because I've accepted my future: Army owns my blood, so really no matter what I'm giving them time, and even if something prevents me from graduating, then I'm stuck going enlisted to fulfill my contract.

Don't say stuck and presume that being enlisted is a bad thing. Soon enough you will find out that NCO's truly run the Army.

Meh, not in my platoon. We had some strong squad and team leaders, and a platoon sergeant that would back us up. I hurt plenty of specialists feelings, but a the same time helped quite a few get promoted.

ehh, not used to the concept of a Non-NCO E-4

I guess the Marine equiv of a "E-4 Mafia" is what we call the "Lance Corporal Underground". Something I could describe as the most efficient decentralized intelligence network in the world. Too bad I'm no longer a member.

Woah... yeah didn't see I used the word stuck. Didn't mean it as a bad thing by any stretch of the imagination. NCOs are the backbone of the Army and are the ones that get shit done. In my ROTC time I've found that if the pay differential wasn't so massive, I'd much rather go Enlisted just because I know I'm going to hate the politics and paperwork associated with being an officer, and I have more of a deathwish that belongs in an Enlisted heart. Hopefully I get a good branch so I can still entertain my mind enough to make a career out of it.

I can't hear you, you're trailing off and did I catch a niner in there? Were you calling from a walkie-talkie?

I have seen plenty of dud E-4s. Hell, I've seen them retire! Those gems that you can make Corporal are rare.

The Army just upped the max years for NCOs on a recent ALARACT.

E-7 26 years
E-7(P) 29 years
E-8 29 years
E-8(P) 32 years (I think)

I dunno if I can stay in more than 26 as an E-8. I mean, I'm 38, coming up on 21 years in the service and I'm about to have my first baby. I might have one last deployment left in me, but I do want to enjoy life. The Army National Guard has been eating my weekends and summers for years but the pay is better, too.

Ah decisions.

Occasionally I throw out a "roger" or an "affirmative/negative" but I try to avoid it.

Hehe I was mostly just giving you a hard time. The transition for me will be extremely tough, especially because I would have already been a squad leader for a year or so by now if I stayed enlisted.

But, like you mentioned, the pay scale gap is enormous.

Yeah, but there are ways to put duds in their place to minimize damage while cultivating the best young guys. Sure, they'll probably end up getting promoted, but behind their peers.

In my short military experience I've noticed that there are a lot more duds in the Guard/Reserve, and this is simply a result of the way they are run. You'll have one great leader somewhere with a bunch of knucklehead battle buddies. The troops under him will be superior, but with no support chain.

Hell, a unit that I was attached to in Afghanistan didn't even know what a Da Form 4856 was or how to use it.

No, nothing wrong with the thread. You, OTOH, are displaying FTA. Failure to Adjust (to the military lifestyle.) It's a reason to kick people out of basic training. You can't even pass basic. Shame, shame.

Little Billy was at the airport with his mommy. They were waiting for Billy's dad to return from a business trip. Little Billy, having recently mastered going potty, tugs on his mother's skirt and says that he has to go to the bathroom. His mom takes his hand and begins taking him towards the women's room when Little Billy, stops and says that he's a big boy now and he wants to go to the men's room by himself. His mother tells him to wash his hands afterwards and Little Billy promises that he will.

Little Billy opens the door and sees a Sailor in his dress whites at the sink. Billy says, "Wow! Are you really a Sailor?" The Sailor looks down at Billy, smiles and puts his white Sailor hat on his head. Little Billy admires himself in the mirror.

All of a sudden a C-130 screams towards the runway. Without landing gear, sparks shoot from it as it skids down the runway. There's a huge explosion and a hatch is kicked open. Out jumps a U.S. Paratrooper dressed in his green class-A uniform, singed and smudged from smoke.

The Paratrooper walks into the airport, kicks down the bathroom door and Little Billy says, "Wow! Are you really a paratrooper?"

The Paratrooper looks down and asks, "Why? You wan't to suck my dick?"

Little Billy says, "Oh! This isn't my hat."

Some. I definitely keep all my clocks on 24 hours. Annoys some people at work though.
