Jeez, didn't realize it was a controlled substance... how much did he have anyway, a tablespoon or two?

Is this the same thing that hockey players were popping sudafed for a few years back?

The "in" thing to do is mix a bottle of the stuff with a bottle of sprite.

I had a few friends who tried it and promptly vomited it back up rofl.

Fixed for contextual accuracy.

It's for coughing too. I actually found a bottle of it in my drawer. My gf used to get them every year because she gets horrible coughs in the winter. Looking it up, it is supposed to numb some muscle that causes the coughing. Crazy that anyone would try to do anything with that drug. I am not really sure what you could do with it.

Codeine is a prodrug, that is the codeine itself doesn't do anything until it is metabolized by your liver into the active drug. In this case that active drug is morphine. On average, about 10% of codeine it metabolized into morphine. So if you take 60mg of codeine you're looking at ~6mg of morphine in your system. That's more or less why it can be abused.

And I have to say the codeine cough syrup that is mixed with promethazine (an antihistamine) is almost tasty. My doctor has prescribed it for me when I've had respitory infections. The codeine syrup that is mixed with guaifenesin is awful tasting. That stuff would make me naseous if I drank too much of it.

So, he was trying to be actively numb? Like his playing style?

I have a feeling that guy never really cared about how well or poorly he played. He just wanted to get a big gauaranteed contract and live off of it like he hit the lottery. At least he didn't want to put any effort into learning. Somewhere, Ryan Leaf is smiling, he's no longer the biggest first round draft bust in the history of the NFL.

I saw something this morning (I think it was on the Fox Sports site) that named Russell as the #2 biggest bust ever, behind Leaf. I think their logic was that Russell still has a chance to redeem his career, whereas Leaf can't. I'm about 99.999999% sure that Russell will never "redeem" himself, so he will definitely be the biggest bust ever. I mean seriously, if you're an NFL GM and need a backup or third stringer, would you remotely consider that guy?

Seriously, Leaf and Russell had the physical tools. All they had to be was average and they would have at least had a long career as backups with good paychecks to go with it.

Gotta give it to Russell all the way. He was the overall 1st pick wasn't he? That has to trump Leaf, although he didn't crater as famously as Leaf.

He sure pounded Notre Dame in the face, though... but who didn't.

That explains his laziness and sleepy approach to football while with the Raiders. He was always sippin' on the sizzurp Purple Drank.

codeine is over the counter medicine in canada.

Um, no. I'm in BC and I got a prescription for codeine cough syrup in the fall when I got pretty sick and had a bad cough.

Even with the recommended dosage (2 teaspoons), I felt buzzed, as if I'd just had 3 beers in the last hour. So I heeded the warning on the bottle and didn't drive right after.

You can get pretty fucked up if you drink even part of the bottle.
