Kind of interesting. Nice because you don't have to load anything other than opening the excel spreadsheet and running the macro that even has a button in the sheet and automatically time the compute.

My 13600K (stock) runs it in 34.16 seconds.

You're using Excel and not another spreadsheet app right?
Yeah that's strange.
I have excel, but it was using "google worksheets" and said "using app" but excel was not a choice. Let me screen copy

And connect other apps does not allow me to select excel

I have office 2007, maybe it wants a newer version ?

edit: so I downloaded it and opened. It had all sorts of things, like scanning for viruses and so forth. Then I had to enable something that was disabled. Not I have a spreadsheet for 62,762 rows, but no idea how long it took or where that calculated number is.

148.61 on the first run, 8250u (Microsoft Surface Laptop 2)

~25 seconds for subsequent runs

First run is the one that counts. Subsequent runs will be faster as some computer remains in the sheet.

It works for what I need. Why spend another $400 or so on a newer version ????

Oh, and forget the monthly billing crap....
2021 Standalone with updates still exists. Current workplace does that over the 360 stuff due to it being impossible to air gap our systems otherwise. M$ hate advertising its existence. Goes without saying a particular nation state will often try to probe our external facing systems. Story of every place I've been at.

In that case, same settings as my run above, but I've uninstalled my Office 365 32bit version (needed for some old plugin to work) and installed Office 365 64bit verision.
5950X stock with 32GB DDR4 3200 CL14
First run: 39.1s

Following runs: 28.1s

I can also install LibraOffice and smash these results in no time, be the champ here till Det0x rolls is with his 7950X3D

OT but this is where home users are getting screwed by software companies. Everything I need Excel for home use I can do with Office 2000 or Google sheets. If I could buy a newer version at a decent price I would consider it, but I'm not paying a subscription for something that I might need a handful of times a year. I still use Lightroom 3 because I refuse to pay a subscription for something I use occasionally.

Let me see:
  1. variable hardware
  2. variable software
So what exactly does this benchmark measure then?

Not to mention a VBA enabled worksheet whose code is password protected? Not sure I would trust that.

It measures how good is your hardware in dealing with bad software and OS configuration

All in all you have valid points and I agree with all of them.

There are places selling Office licenses for less than $20. Are they selling unused licenses from large corporation buys or something similar?

From what I've seen reported online, that is exactly what they are doing. I think some times it is also keys that are meant for systems in developing countries (basically subsidized cost for poor countries). At best it's a "grey market" type situation. It's for sure against the terms of whatever license agreement is attached to the licenses.

Librecalc does it faster. My 12700K can do it in 25 secs (first run) and about 17 secs on subsequent run.

I think Det0x had this running in less than 12 seconds on his souped up 7950X.

This benchmark seems to be sensitive to ST performance. I wonder how many years before CPUs are able to finish it in one second.

I looked at the code.. this just does an on page sort.. it'd be a heap quicker if the person who wrote it did it in an array, so I'm kind of wondering why he/she didn't.

[edit] Would need to use an interim table, but you'd run the calcs in the array, then spit out the answers. [/edit]

It's gray market. Cannot get more into it without violating the rules. the newer excel and offices incorporate a lot of ai automation that makes it easier for people who use the software daily for work.

Any office 2007 and beyond version should work fine with a newer office file. The only issue was back in 2006 when office 2007 drops .doc for .docx and I think that was eventually fixed.

Yes, but this is a xlsm, and does not seem to work. It loads, just no benchmark number and is really slow.

I know I'm asking you about something you specifically said you can't discuss but come on you can't write that and expect no one to be really curious now?

What can you say? Are you under an NDA of some sort for MS Office software?
