Excellent signal strength but very very slow internet connection ??

wireless setup: using linksys wireless router 2.4g 802.11b (connected to dsl) located in my friend's apartment 25 ft (direct distance thru apartment walls) away. I have a D-link 802.11b compatible wireless pci card using windows xp os on a athlon xp 2500/1024MB rig.

the computer detected excellent signal strength (11mbps, shown on the system tray) but it is awfully slow to load a website (any website like hotmail , cnn, nba.com,...) it is even way slower than a 56k dial up.

My question is since the computer detected excellent signal strength and i can still connect to the internet ( except it is extremely extremely slow), what could be the problems?

That usually means that part of the ?Excellent? signal includes a lot of noise.

What counts in reception is the Signal Strength bu it self, but the Signal to Noise Ratio.

Look for gizmos like 2.4GHz Phones, and Microwaves that are in your way.

Will the microwave and phone really affect that much if they are not active?

The microwave is 5 feet away and the 900MHz phone is 3 feet away. I will try to move the computer farther away and see if that helps. (I do occasionally experience fast connection though every once in a while)
