Excessive Bandwidth Usage

I'm wondering, have any of you guys ever been warned or cut off by your ISP because of excessive bandwidth usage? I noticed that my ISP's website states that there is a limit but for those who download and upload, I can't see how anyone can stay below the limit. A friend of mine downloads and uploads at will and says ISP's don't usually do anything as long as it's not total abuse because of the competition within the region but I can't help but be paranoid at times.

I work for my own ISP, but yes, I get warnings from the boss occasionally. He mostly just wants burned copies of any tv shows or whatever I am downloading so he can watch too.

No. I've even downloaded Vista a few times over the past couple months and have had no problem.

That's roughly 400mb of downloading a day. I don't even touch that.

I hit a 175 GB last month and I got a letter from my ISP asking to please slow down a bit...Technically my limit is 120GB's.

Yes, on your contract it should say that they reserve the right to penalize you for going over their limit. Of course, they usually don't (as it's not usually a problem and want to keep your business) and will simply warn you a couple of times...if that.

I work for a major ISP, and we do suspensions. Usually only 24-48 hours.

I have a 60gb limit but I usually never get that close. I know 2 friends who had their service cut off from the same ISP for exceeding bandwidth usage. This was before they had any limit stated publicly. Now I believe they drop you down to 128K service if you go over.

jeez, that is a whole lot of downloading

No it is not.

HDTV content alone for each seperate item is anywhere from 5 to 25 gigs depending on how long said content is.

Lets say each one is 16 gigs. Thats only 118 items. Thats not a lot.

Though its more like only 90 items because some are 25 gigs.

This is our first month on broadband (was using dialup, so excessive usage was not even possible!), I am interested to see if our ISP says anything about usage. It is wireless EVDO broadband through our cellular provider Alltel. Looking like I'll end up at about 10GB by the end of the month, which doesn't seem too excessive to me, but I've heard of other EVDO users (from different providers) getting accounts shut down after as little as 5GB/mo. Our plan is advertised as unlimited, though, and I couldn't find anything in the terms of service that would suggest otherwise, so we'll see.

Most I've ever downloaded in a month was probably about 120GB (lots of HD content downloading). Didn't receive a letter. Of course, the next month, I was on vacation for half the month and downloaded about 15-20GB during that billing period.

Never gone over the limit with Bell, and I do HD content, games, and the normal stuff you'd do.
