Exchange 2003 & IMAP Help

Hmm... Wonder if any Exchange gurus can help out here. Recently setup the IMAP4 service of the Exchange 2003 but I seem to be getting a slight problem when I use it. Keep getting this error:

You do not have permission to send to this recipient. 550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for someone@somewhere.com

From my best guess this has to do with some anti-spam protection of E2K3. But shouldn't authenticated users be able to send mail from outside as long as they authenticate successfully to their account? Users are able to pull e-mail down fine but can't send. SMTP seems to be setup correctly as well. The "Allow all computers which sucessfully authenticate to relay, regardless of list above" option is checked.

Outlook and the OWA clients work fine.

Any ides?

Sounds like a client side setting to me.

When you use IMAP to read, you use SMTP to send. When you set up the account and specify the IMAP and SMTP servers, you provide the username and password for the IMAP server, but not SMTP (by default).

On the email client, in the settings for the IMAP account there is an option, something along the lines of "My SMTP server requires authentication" and then a check box that says something like "Use same username and password as the IMAP settings".

Check these off. You'll be good to go.

The user's desktop machine itself cannot authenticate (SMTP AUTH command) with the Exchange SMTP daemon, so you will need to have the email client do it. Keep in mind that a regular MAPI (i.e. outlook to Exchange) connection is preauthenticated by AD, so it would be expected that OWA and Outlook work fine.

Another solution would be to specifically allow relay for the client machine IP's, but better to do it with client authentication, as it will work on any machine without having to set anything up on the server
