At the end of her life, Dorothy Parker put considerable estate on the line for freedom and justice for African Americans.

As a kid of about 11 or 12 (yeah, I know, I'm weird), I came across the members of the Algonquin Round Table. They were both smart and dead nuts funny. They went into my pantheon of approximate heroes. And none were funnier than Dorothy Parker, who famously once said, "If you have nothing good to say, sit by me."

Anyway, I just learned today that, at her death, she willed her entire estate to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King;

Dorothy Parker, who was born on this day in 1893, once suggested her own epitaph: “Excuse my dust.”
It was a classic, coolly unsentimental remark by Ms. Parker, the acerbic wit whose writing was a mainstay in Vanity Fair and The New Yorker for years. But her other post-mortem plans came as a surprise to many.

The sharp-witted Dorothy Parker.

When she died on June 7, 1967, the bulk of her estate was left to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr., whom she had never met. Ms. Parker, a champion of humanitarian and left-wing causes, admired the civil rights leader’s work, but even Dr. King was surprised.

My admiration for this brilliant and witty woman has now grown and deepened.

Here are a few of the things she said, quoted:

“If you want to know what God thinks of money, just look at the people he gave it to.”

"Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes to the bone." <---- Yeah, she FIRST said that.

"It serve me right for putting all my eggs in one bastard."

“That woman speaks eighteen languages, and she can’t say “No” in any of them.”

"The cure for boredom is curiosity. There is no cure for curiosity."

“The first thing I do in the morning is brush my teeth and sharpen my tongue.”

“Don’t look at me in that tone of voice.”

“He and I had an office so tiny, that an inch smaller and it would have been adultery.”

“There’s life for you. Spend the best years of your life studying penmanship and rhetoric and syntax and Beowulf and George Eliot, and then somebody steals your pencil.”

“Of course I talk to myself. I like a good speaker, and I appreciate an intelligent audience.”

“You can lead a horticulture, but you can't make her think.”

“Men seldom make passes at girls who wear glasses.” <----- Yep, she coined this.

“I’d rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.” <----- Again!

When asked if she was going to join Alcoholics Anonymous: “Certainly not. They want me to stop now.”

“Money cannot buy health, but I'd settle for a diamond-studded wheelchair.”

“I require three things in a man: he must be handsome, ruthless, and stupid.”

“That would be a good thing for them to cut on my tombstone: Wherever she went, including here, it was against her better judgment.”

“Miss Hepburn ran the whole gamut of emotions—from A to B.” <---- A scathing and pithy review!

"I like to have a martini,
Two at the very most.
After three I'm under the table,
after four I'm under my host."

"Razors pain you,
Rivers are damp,
Acids stain you,
And drugs cause cramp.
Guns aren't lawful,
Nooses give,
Gas smells awful.
You might as well live. "

She attempted suicide four times in her life. She was better at writing.

I can't wait to read how the humorless ideological pinheads here, those tiny little right-wing apologists and Trump enablers, respond to this post. Have at it, boyz!

I used to refer to these as "gauntlet posts". Declare something and dare people to respond. I wondered then and I wonder now what it is that needs to be fulfilled that causes these posts to be created.

My response would be that I am glad that I am not carrying around the kind of baggage that would lead to obsessing on the morning of the 22nd of August, 2018 with a woman that died in 1967 to the point that I not only was compelled to create a thread about it, but that I needed to dare people to respond. Not only dare people but to do so with malice.

I'm certain you're not asking for advice but I'm going to give you some. Take some time off. Take a week, take two, take a month, whatever it takes. Whatever it is that is bothering you appears to me to be serious. Daring people to fight with you is not good.

On the morning following big news that appears to be detrimental to a president you appear to hate with every fiber of your being, you are posting this? Your brethren are celebrating and you're itching for a fight? People end marriages, people quit jobs, people move, people make big changes in their lives and survive. It happens every day. If something is telling you to make a change, make it.

And it begins, predictably.

You put out the cheese, and the rats run right over and post, reliably self-selecting for stupidity . . . so dense they really, really don't know that they're outing themselves.

They can't help themselves, folks. They're rats. Pinhead rats at that.

I'm sorry whats the argument again? Oh right, there is none - it's just some quotes from someone in the past that you (obviously) heavily idolize. Congrats?

Put the bottle down man, you do sound angry like you're actively seeking disagreement and resentment. Go outside and play catch or something.

I am not seeking disagreement or resentment, I was PREDICTING it. Thanks for proving me right.

And there was no argument being put forth by me . . . just a paean and appreciation of a female writer of great intellect and talent, on the anniversary of her death, who I was pleased to discover today had left all her money in the world to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King. Good on you, Ms. Dorothy Parker!

I knew small-minded and uncomprehending weasels would respond in the manner that weasels are want to do. Congratulations! You came in right on time.

What have we disagreed with? You idolize this person. Okay. There is no resentment or disagreement here - There is no argument here - which is the entire purpose of Politics and News.

Is this politics? No. Is this news? No.

I just don't understand why you don't post this in OT or something. There isn't a discussion or argument to be had based on your post.

What you call baggage to me sounds like something important that has lost its place for indulging. I could criticize the choice of venue for these posts, but I think that would make me a hypocrite.

Not from me, but I PREDICTED that it would come from the likes of you, and it did, in the true disparaging words of hyper-partisan weasel and I quote:

it's just some quotes from someone in the past that you (obviously) heavily idolize. Congrats?

Also:

- There is no argument here - which is the entire purpose of Politics and News.
No, it's NOT, asshole.
News can just be news, you know? I guess this is a concept, devoid of argument, you just can't relate to. #Sad

Is this politics? No. Is this news? No.
Wow. You really are a brain dead pinhead. This IS news. Dorothy Parker has a firm place in the literary canon of American writers and wit, whether you were ever aware of that or not. This is the anniversary of her birth. And, as for politics? ON the anniversary of her birth, the news is that she made a deeply honorable and POLITICAL statement by bequeathing her entire estate to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King's crusade for our African American brethren.

I just don't understand why you don't post this in OT or something.
Of course you don't. Now stop playihg mod.

There isn't a discussion or argument to be had based on your post.
Sweet Jesus, you're dense. P&N is politics and news. This IS news . . . and with a prominently political bent to it. You're looking for an argument, it's down the fucking hall.

"Discussion" would be, not attacking me, but reflecting on Dorothy Parker, a true American literary icon, with some small modicum of grace and respect.

But you just couldn't do that, could you?

People are so trained towards fighting they forget to stop and smell the roses. Yes, I do believe that is the case.

Perk, what a curious woman and group of people I had never heard of before.

So why was this posted in P&N? Perk...why are you asking for a fight? I appreciate the post (didn’t realize she had left her estate to Dr. King either), but hate that everything has to be a divisive fight. Let the trolls be the ones to create the division...don’t post with it in mind...then you are just part of the problem.

Anyway, I just learned today that, at her death, she willed her entire estate to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King;

A progressive that actually gave her own money willingly and didn't just say "collective action problem" and demand the government force her to be "charitable" via her taxes. She's a very good example for you to emulate and not just admire.

Read the original post and came away with 2 takeaways.
1. Learned something new about someone I was not familiar with. To me that is always a win win.
2. It seemed to be posted in the wrong sub-forum.

Normally, I'd just read something like this and not reply to it but then I started scrolling.

Pretty remarkable lady there, Perk, but don't tell me that I don't know drunk posting when I see it!
Wow sometimes I forget I moderate a forum full of nerds and Tech heads who every time they come across genuine emotion think the person must be drunk. # sad

I just meant the last line. Besides, just call me chief-projector when it comes to pissing out accusations of drunk posting.

@Perknose , I want to better appreciate having this very interesting person brought to my attention, but that pugnacious bullshit ending really just distracts from what was otherwise an excellent post. Thanks for the good parts, though.

I'll just agree with PricklyPete here:

I'd rather hope for better leadership by example in the future, but at the same time won't be holding my breath. I consider it a real shame that this kind of stuff is condoned and encouraged here from the highest levels.

Being a humorless ideological pinhead and all, I still enjoyed reading about her...such a colorful human being!

Happy Birthday Dorothy Parker!

Its sad as well. The most colorful people often have the darkest past. A broken soul seems to open the door to a beauty that most of us would enjoy, but, their wounds are too deep to fill.

The most meaningful art often springs from the most tortured of souls, those who have a hurt or an emptiness that they try valiantly to fill with amazing works. Dorothy Parker's words and wit are everlasting masterpieces.
