While reading the Rambutan thread from earlier, I remembered stories friends had told me about fruit outside North America.

I've been told that fruit in different parts of the world are not only better tasting than what is available here, but there are many different types of fruit that I've never even heard of. My international travel has taken me to Mexico and pretty much all of the Caribbean, so not really much different than what's available in the US.

What are some examples of fruit common to other parts of the world?

Any links to pics would be cool too.

When I lived in England, a fruit called guanabana (I believe) was very popular with alot of the African immagrents. I never ate any fresh, but the juice, which you could buy in stores, was to die for! It was kinda thick and white with a sweetness of honey.

I guess it wasnt African, but they liked it all the same.

isn't durian banned on flights/public places due to its stench? I doubt I could eat something that stunk like ass. Isn't smell necessary for taste? I guess I shouldn't knock it before I try it

Andrew Zimmern, host of the show Bizarre Foods, who tries all sorts of crazy, exotic, disgusting foods (still-beating frog heart, anyone?), had to cough up the piece of fresh durian. Utterly vile stuff that durian.

seems some people love them, but I don't know if I could do it (especially if the host of that show couldn't amnage it).

Very good! I had them in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Canada. They are not allowed to be imported to the United States since the fruit easily attracts the wrong kind of insects that like to travel with this fruit. Very delicious and tasty!

Fruits are tricky, biggest issue is they don't travel well. Good fruits are only picked when they are ripe, which means 2 weeks tops of shelf life.

Any fruit that has been trucked more than 2 days is by definition not a good fruit.

Basically, unless you are talking about local fruits, they suck.

Watermelon in NA is crap, no taste nor smell, just water.
