Watched Superman The Movie (1978) this week, part of my personal Gene Hackman festival. At the beginning they hypothesized that there are 26 galaxies in the universe, obviously ridiculous with what we know now. So I just looked that up:
I'm reading a very interesting Wikipedia page (I love Wikipedia!) on the future of the earth. Has lots of info new to me. For instance, I'd never heard of gamma ray bursts, the largest releases of energy in the universe except for the Big Bang itself. I did know (very common knowledge) that the earth will be destroyed (absorbed) by the sun in 5-7.5 billion years when it turns into a red giant. Ah, but that's a mere bauble:
Estimates suggest there are between 200 billion and 2 trillion galaxies in the observable universe, but the true number is likely much higher, potentially infinite, due to the universe's vastness and the limitations of current observational capabilities.
