Expense paradox in Tokyo

I may have to get an apartment in Tokyo next year. If I'm lucky, I can get a place in Kamakura instead of downtown Tokyo. What I've noticed is that housing is extremely expensive in Japan. But food prices are much much lower there than in New York. Even eating out is cheaper than New York.

Amount of funds spent for housing should easily exceed the extra cost of food elsewhere

Yeah, I know. So, IMHO, it's better to buy than rent. The population of Japan is declining but the population of Tokyo is increasing. Another paradox.

My SO prefers it. It's more quiet, suburban and the house there would be closer to the beach. And, not too far away, is a giant Buddha statue.

I know Kamakura and was hoping you'd say beach and not because of the Buddha. Unless of course you want to go see it everyday.

I'd recommend Yokohama depending on where you work in Tokyo.

i think that is common sense.

also gee housing in Japan is more then NY really? you are surprised?

That is not surprising. But you'd think, because of the population density (over 20 million people in Tokyo), everything else would be more expensive. But food prices are much cheaper than New York.

People say I remind them of the Buddha. I'd love to live in Yokohama for their Chinatown alone (the largest in the world outside of Chinese cities). But there's also an American military base there...

I hear housing near Fukushima is plenty cheap right now. Seems likes a perfect place for you and your "friends" to hang out, especially if they bring over mistresses that they want to get rid of.

I found food prices to be about the same for a casual meal. But, it felt better in Japan because there was a lot more variety in quick, sit down restaurants.

Are you Asian? That would be cool to live in another country like that, but going from western culture to eastern culture would seem like a huge shock to me.

How are you preparing for living there?

There are bases all over that part of Japan.

I would rather live in Yokohama, tbh. I'd never want to live in a big city like Tokyo where space is limited and I'd end up paying too much for some shitty apartment in a high rise.

There are some nice apartments in Yokohama. Personally, I'd want to live near the Pier with the Ferris Wheel, right in those towers right there.

Minato-mirai district. That place is really nice.
