Mom & Pop shops can really only compete in terms of superior knowledge and customer service nowadays. Sadly, most people prefer the cheaper products above all.

Capitalism, in its current incarnation, is broken.

So you are saying that people prefer cheaper products over superior knowledge and that big box stores are doing well by providing the former instead of the latter... seems like customers are getting what they want and capitalism is working fine. Just because you don't agree that people should prefer cheaper products doesn't mean that capitalism is broken.

Yea, the cheap products do get the job done after all. You get diminishing returns on your quality of goods when you spend more and more money per item. So you might not buy the cheapest model from walmart, but you can still get decent stuff there.

Other than that, YOUR the one wasting resources

Mom & pop stores don't have to be completely ridiculous on prices either.

I run a small store that specializes in work and western wear. Anyone would consider us a mom and pop, but we manage to stay pretty close to the prices of the Wal-Mart down the street on the items that both of us carry. For example Wal-Mart sells dickies workpants for something like 19.98. We have them for 24.95. Yeah, that's 5 bucks, but Wal-mart doesn't carry them in nearly the sizes we do and doesn't keep as much stock either. Considering the fact that Wal-Mart probably gets them a lot cheaper than us, I'd say we're doing pretty good.

The big thing is that wal-mart can't touch us on the quality of the vast majority of out items, and we're in a business where differences in quality are felt more acutely by the customer using the product.

The other day I called the two local computer shops near me and asked if they had a Q9400 processor in stock.

The first one said "We only stock AMD processors. You might try the other place in town though, they sell Intel systems."

So I call the second store and ask if they had one and they said "We don't sell individual processors. Only assembled systems." So I said "okay thanks" and hung up.

I should call them back and say "Hey I know you don't sell processors individually, but I really want to support the local economy, can you make an exception? Though if you'd rather I buy online I can do that."

I like expensive mom and pop stores because a lot of stupid suckers support them. I had an old neighbor who swore by this MNP pizza place. Their large was like 2.5x more $ than one from Pizza Hut. But he swore up and down that it was worth the $$$ because it was so much higher quality. He almost shat his pants when I found out they didn't even use real cheese and told him. I absolutely love all the r-tards who have this notion that mom and pop ALWAYS = 100x better quality than any chain.

No, I'm saying that many people prefer cheaper products because they simply aren't looking at any of the long-term ramifications of supporting the big box business model.

People like buying cheap products, but then bitch and complain when things wear out/break after a few months or a year, when jobs are outsourced abroad and local economies are gutted, and when they can't find products or get answers from the minimum wage staff at the big box store. You can't have it all.
