The first monitor I bought new was a Nanao 17" that I snagged for a very good price at $1000 around 1995. At the time it was a great monitor. I still have it. It always worked fine. But I plugged it in a few months ago and got no response. What would cause this?

An 8.5 x 11 sheet was left at my door a few days ago saying a concern was going around collecting all kinds of things, including electronic equipment and recycling them free, including monitors and TVs. This strikes me as kind of a scam (they sell stuff), but "whatever." For some reason they want me to fill my name and address and phone number in the event I leave a monitor or TV. Should I do this and leave the paper out there with the monitor? I figure I'd have to pay $25-50 if I drop it off at a typical facility. :\

Yes, and I bought my printer at about the same time, an HP Laserjet 4, and it wasn't even new - almost new, I saw the listing in my local paper and the owner told me he'd only printed about 10 pages on it. At the time I didn't know you could get a page count. Maybe it was true. It had an extra 4MB of RAM for a total of 6MB, making it almost an HP4M (it lacked the postscript module). I paid about $1300 and went and bought the PS module for another $300 or so. It's been my only printer ever since. What a work horse! Dog slow by today's standards, but reliable the the output is really great, though B&W, of course.

That's wierd. I've seen those electronics recycling drives around me, and I don't ever recall having to leave my name and phone number with them. If this is being organized by a charity, perhaps they want that personal info to contact you in the future regarding donations.

Yes, that would make sense. However, that seems a very sneaky way of getting that info. I'll look into the Best Buy idea. I don't think it's a charity, there's no indication of that. Reading between the lines it looks like some guy or a small group into profiting by turning over stuff. They accept scrap metal, electronics, computers, appliances, etc.

I wonder why the monitor seems dead now. It was a super CRT. If it worked, it seems to me, it might have considerable value to a graphic artist. Well, maybe. It came with a system of color calibration to support graphic artists.
