Hey all,

Long time not post...I was wondering if anyone out there could share their experiences with buying a "recertified" video card from Newegg??? I'm seriously considering buying a recertified 7800GT, but I want to do a little research first.

I've read through most of the user reviews at the egg...most are positive..but some are not. I'm just looking for a second opinion.

Currently I'm running a 6800GS on an ASUS A8n5X motherboard, 1 gig of ram, a soundblaster audigy soundcard and an Opteron 144 at 2.5 Ghz..

thanks for the opinions..

Between me and the friends I've had buy refurb'd cards from newegg I can vouch for over 12 cards ranging from 9600XT's to an X1800XL all being in perfect working order but without accessories.

I've not had a single bad experience with thier refurb'd cards but I've heard of others getting bad cards twice in a row, at least they have a 30 day return policy on thier refurb'd cards.

I literally just ordered that very card (Evga 7800GT Vivo PCIe) as a 'recert' from newegg at an awesome price. I'll let you know how it turns out

I have ordered a few over the years, and have had no problems. I will usually buy if they are a good price, and I will not be system down if I have to RMA. Lucky for me (or a curse if you ask my wife), I have alot of extra hardware laying around. If I have to send an item back for RMA, I can usually limp along until I get it back, or get something else.

Most of those 'recerts' are returns from users who simply don't know much about computers and say 'it doesn't work' because they bought a PCI-E for their AGP system, or didn't install the drivers, or some other goofy issue (tons of viruses/spyware)... they'll return a perfectly good card, but because it's been "used" they have to recertify it... usually there's absolutely nothing wrong with them, and you just get a good deal.

I bought one, sometimes they send you cards that overheated with a standard cooler, so its possible to get a card with a larger(and possibly noisier) cooler.
If you get a really good price its worth the risk in my opinion though.

I've ordered several open box cards from NewEgg.... they will almost always be in an OEM white box with no accessories. I state that because SOME open box stuff from NewEgg tends to come as it was in retail pack (despite the disclaimer) but the video cards are usually OEM boxed. My last was an x850XT... Good deal? Pretty good... Memory overclocks to about 620... core doesn't overclock much, but hey... I only paid $95 for it.

I bought an open box x1900xtx that was hitting 95c on the stock cooler at load. AS5 dropped my temps to 72c.

It's probably the best overclocking card I've ever owned, hitting 750/875.

There is "refurb," "open box" and "recertified." The first two are synonymous at Newegg.

Not 30 days. Newegg.com guarantees all Open Box product for 15 days only.

Last I checked, the only way to RMA an "open box" item was for a refund, meaning 15% restocking applies even if part was DOA.

Speaking of DOA, I've gotten DOA video cards. Have had better luck in the past year with no DOA out of about six cards (though one failed after about 6 months), but in the previous few years I've gotten about 1 out of 4 DOA on cards. Most cards are "bare" but a few came in opened retail boxes.

Ok, got the card this afternoon. Open the box, and my initial reaction is "Cool! The DVI/VGA adapters, VIVO medusa cable, everything's here but the driver CD which I don't need anyway!" About 10 seconds later, I notice that a cap in the corner is HANGING OFF, one end totally broken away from the PCB itself. Panic hits me Luckily, I have a buddy in town that specializes in difficult soldering jobs, so I take it to him, and 10 minutes later, he's got it perfect. Bring it back, plug it in, turn it on .. and Windows boots. So far, so good, played some Doom3, Titan Quest, 3dmark, no problems. Very nice card. Does 1080p Quicktime with silky perfection. HUGE upgrade from my 7600GS!

So .. if you get one of these cards, check it VERY carefully immediately after you receive it. If I hadn't known a solder ace, I would have had to RMA this sucker and wait for the replacement All in all, a good deal still.

I've bought a couple of hundred items from newegg over the years, and this is the FIRST (hopefully last) time I've recieved something that wasn't absolutely perfect. Kinda scary.

Anyway, sold my 7600GS 256MB PCIe Silent Edition for $90, so this upgrade only set me back $40ish. Whee.

Good luck!
