Experienced builder at a loss

I'm in the midst of building another system just to sell and it turns off randomly after a minute.

I have the following components
x3460 and an x3470
MSI p55 motherboard and an MSI h55 motherboard
8gb of ram Hynix and Samsung
gtx 760 and a 8400gs
480gb SSD
500W Antec Bronze psu

I've tried various combinations of the ram, both motherboards, both GPU's, different CPU coolers and both processors. At this point all I can think of is the power supply is faulty or the MSI boards have first revisions of the BIOS that don't work with Xeons (I've never experienced this issue before).

Does anyone else have thoughts?

I would suggest you stop building computers to "sell" and start learning how to build computers that simply work.

While I don't have any specific experience with P55-chipset platform systems (I skipped that generation), I know that there were socket power-delivery issues, and quite frankly, if the system keeps powering-off, why didn't you try a new, known-good working PSU right off? That would have been one of the FIRST things that I would have tried (after checking my cabling), not the last.

The other, would be checking CPU compatibility online, if a new PSU didn't fix the issue, since you appear to be trying to use non-officially-supported CPUs (Xeons) in a consumer board. That can be iffy, depending on the mfg, at least, in other generations of CPUs, I don't specifically know about that one. I don't tend to do that when I build.

And to "sell"? This ancient frankenbuild hardly sounds like something saleable, to me at least.

I've flipped many x3440 builds in P55 and H55 boards before. The majority have been ASUS or Gigabyte boards. Kids looking to play fortnite that only have $350 to spend and don't know how to build their own computer are more than happy with something like a 1050 and an x3440 slightly overclocked.

I have another known working Antec 520w High Current Gamer. If that doesn't work, I'm assuming I'll need to update the BIOS on these boards. I can't imagine both boards having old BIOS revisions when they were purchased at different times.

Interesting. I had to look it up, but that's a 4C/8T chip. Not too shabby. I'm guessing, buy server pulls off of the 'bay, and some cheap secondhand P55/H55 mobos, and do it up, with a minimalist dGPU for Fortnite? Not a bad gig side hustle, I guess.

How do those chips perform, compared to a Sandy, Ivy, or Haswell 4C/4T CPU? Are they actually faster?

They're about equal to a 2700k or 3770k. Well over 100FPS in mainstream competitive titles. I actually am able to sell x5670 6 core 3ghz chips on server HP z400 boards for $500 a build with something like a rx 580 or gtx 1060 3gb. Those are fairly on pair with first gen Ryzen and actually can be overclocked in Windows with a utility tool.

After a minute doing what? If you're booting windows I would boot to linux or something else like memtest86+ to run that or just leave it sitting in the bios.

Yes I suspect the power supply. Bios version is not likely if it manages to run for a minute, presumably finishing booting an OS before it crashes.

Do your MSI boards monitor temps? If the CPU is overheating, it would do the same as what you are experiencing. If you find no issue with the temps, then I would look at the power supply.

^ Yeah any retail (non-OEM) board I've seen for many years, shows temps in the bios which could be watched as it rises or doesn't.

Using a known working Antec HCG, power delivery is fine I guess it was just a faulty Antec earthwatts.

Yeah i've seen a lot of the older Antec Earthwatt power supplies die over the past few years.

Man, it's always the power supply. Even when you're sure it's not. Actually, especially when you're sure.
