experiences with Linksys Cisco Refurbs?

Thinking about getting a refurbed linksys E4200 for $95 on cisco.com ( I posted this in hot deals).

Can someone vouch for their quality? I know some refurbed products are better than others. where does linksys refurb quality stand?

Well refurbs by nature are hit or miss. Depends on the reason it was returned to manufacturer and if any repair was done. IMO, refurbs are better than buying new as whatever issues you might have encountered with a new unit would have been resolved in the repaired refurb unit.

Anyway, I bought 2 refurb Linksys E2000s about 8 months ago. Came in a Linksys whitebox, with plastic wrapping and looked brand new. Loaded them up with Tomato from Victek and added external 9dBi antennas. Both have been running stable 24/7.

A referb from Cisco will meet there standards, and a $179 router for $95 is a deal. I have an E4200 I paid $100 for (marked down since it was a return), and I reset to factory, installed the latest firmware, and configured.

Being a dual-band supporting multiple SSID's and MIMO it has definitely helped with all my wireless device connectivity (average about 10 devices connected at any point). It has also proved to be a stable unit, as it has been problem free for about 3 months now. Previous Linksys I have had needed reseting every couple of weeks on average.

Well, I picked myself up an E4200. I'm looking forward to using it with my actiontec FIOS router for the wireless N part. as I can't stream any movies with the current router.

I would suggest going to NewEgg and reading the reviews of the refurb Linksys routers. It appears to me there is about a 30% or higher failure rate or intermittent problems on repaired units. For me 1 in 3 failure is a bit too high. I used to work in a place that repaired circuit boards. The repair is highly dependent on the skills and honesty of the technician. What they do is hook the board up to a test machine and run it through a test program. If the problem doesn't show up they pass it and send it out. If there is an intermittent problem often it's not even found during testing and passed as functional. I think Linksys gives a 90 day warranty on refurbs where you get a year for a new unit don't you? Reviews state that Cisco doesn't stand behind their refurb routers with live tech support. It's a gamble in my opinion. Good luck with your purchase and I'm sure we'd all be interested in hearing your experience with your refurb router....
