Got this Corsair HX1000W from oct.2008 thats been offline max 1 year.
Its in a nas since 2020 and im a little worried it would cut power only to a couple of hdds instead of all if it goes.
Did clean it in 2020 inside and there was no observable bulging of capacitors.

How did ur old psus fail?

Makes no sense to me that a failng PSU would/could selectively cut power to only a couple HDD instead of all. The protection circuit should shut whole PSU down.

Old PSU I've had fail, did so from marginal brand capacitors that aged out and vented. IIRC, a long time ago I had one where a power surge fried a transistor. I used to service other peoples' PCs and another common fault was the sleeve bearing fan died, user didn't notice, and the PSU cooked itself which again, was usually the capacitors that failed first.

What is the power draw on the NAS? Mine has a very low power draw with a mobile CPU mostly idle, integrated video, and some HDDs isn't much compared to a load on a high power CPU or GPU, so I would expect the PSU to last quite a long time, but if your data or uptime is especially important, your call to replace the PSU now as it is 14 years old.

Given you had enough concern to make this topic, the conservative answer is go ahead and replace.

I've only had 1 PSU fail, and it fried the motherboard along with it. My unraid NAS was built in 2007, and I'm up in the air about replacing it all together, or piece by piece. Knowing me, I won't do anything until it dies.

Didnt measure exactly but think its somewhere between 80-100w according to ups usage %. Probably gonna wait a couple of years for atx3.0 psus to mature and get one for main computer. Did look around a little bit and its a shame corsair dont have the option to turn off zero fan mode. Got a rm750i version that is annoying because it needs software for rail and fan control and forgets settings if off power I think.

To start mostly tiny system-wide failures, at first. These would progress into hard failures like complete shut downs until the system wouldn't even start. Bear in mind my experiences with this sort of thing go back about 45-years.

My memory about it is fuzzy, but isn't LC a very low end Foxconn brand? Maybe not, I'm thinking of L&C, not LC-Power, or maybe they are the same brand name altered a little to get past their poor historical performance?

Anyway, the off (3rd tier and lower) makes and models with sleeve bearing fans, you have to watch out for fan failures, replace fan or relube it every couple years (within the duty of running 24/7 as a NAS, less often for desktop PC that aren't running 24/7) before it starts running dry and chewing up the bearing.
