The TI4200 is an upgrade option for these machines... so I'm sure you would have no problems.

I was planning on building my own computer. But, at this price the Dell looks awfully tempting. An Intel 2.4 gig cpu in retail box sells for 193 bucks alone! But, if they build this with a skimpy power supply, it might be money down the drain in the long run. I just got a good deal at best buy on a PNY TI 4200 for 99 bucks after rebate! One of the requirements for this card is a 350 watt power supply. If you need a 350 watt power supply now to run a gizmo, can you imagine the power requirements for gizmos a year down the line? Dont forget your gonna have to buy a modem and extra memory. mmmmm???

actually, they come with a 250w PSU. i wanted to upgrade that on order, but they didnt have the option to. so now im hoping it will be able to poweer a 2.4GHz cpu, 2 DIMMs of PC2100 memory, 2 large 40GB 7200 RPM high speed hard drives, and my radeon 8500, while boosting the 16x DVD and a 48x burner. its a lot, but i dont think dell would ship a computer that wouldnt run standard peripherals because of too little power.... these extra things ill be using are VERY typical, so i think dell should have it handled.

actually, one can build this system for a drop less than that.
but not if one is legally obtaining windows XP.

it sucks that they don't actually give you the disk though.
what happens in 2 years if you want to do a reformat and reinstall?

why don't you change the PSU to a 400 W one. it's not expensive.

i also find it incredible that they dont give you a windows xp disc. thats ridiculous, im planning to reformat RIGHT when i get the comuter next week. Dell always puts all this garbage software that beefs up the system. looks like ill have to borrw my friend's win xp home disc and make a copy of something..-_- at least they give you a key.

1) they give you the cd's to do an image restore / reformat. they just don't give you the OS by itself on a cd.

2) if I build this myself for the same price will you also provide me with onsite warranty / support? ha

They do in fact give you a copy of the O/S. It was that way when I order my 8100 series desktop a couple years ago (win2k pro), and the same when I ordered a couple 4300s series desktops (winxp pro) about 6 monthes ago. They "brand" the CD w/ their logo, but it is a full copy of the O/S none-the-less

thats what i plan to do IF the 250w one that comes with it cant handle the system. i already have a 300w power supply in my athlon xp 1800+ box and i might just swap the dell one with that if they are the same form factor. since athlons eat way more power then the P4s...even when the clockspeeds are different in extremes.

There power supplies are up to snuff, I had upgraded my old dell, P3 450, to and 850, added two hard drives for a total of three drives, added a cd-rw, dvd drive, geforce 2 pro, all the pci slots were filled and the thing never hiccuped once, You won't have to worry about the psu crapping out on you.

Hey all! I had a newbie question. If someone could help that would be great. What is the difference between the 4500 and the 2300 Dimension Desktops? I checked and the coupon and 100 Rebate applies to both. So I am kinda torn. $358 for the 2300 or $466 for the 4500. Any help would be great. Thanks!

Bought 3 for friends and family members. All equiped with the the ti4200 64mg card. They all needed a little more ram to run properly. NOT ocable! By far the best deal on a computer right now. You buy it and leave it. You dont have to do tech for them or worry about things failing etc. Its Dells problem. Legit copy of XP. Very quiet but very poorly designed cooling. Does slow when it overheats cuz the passive cooling.
BTW get the HD for $20 and the DVD for $30. If you want to game than invest $70-$90 more for the ti4200.

My general experience with Dell is that they build some quality computers at a good price. You really get a decent computer for what you pay for and that's all I would ask for from a computer company. Their support is really good compared to other companies. Though I got in on one of the 4500 back in August(10-17th). I have to say that it the only thing I have not been happy with.

The 4500's were fine, a little slow, but that was fixed after adding some RAM, the problem was that it was an online order and it didn't seem to go through. So I called up Dell and they told me that I could order them over the phone for the same exact price shipped. It was great since it even came out to be a little cheaper for some reason. I received the two computers I ordered over the phone promptly and they worked fine. Whisper quiet like everyone else says. Then all of the sudden, 2 or 3 days later, the two 4500's I ordered online showed up. I called Dell up and of course they offered to sell the computers to be for a discounted price but I refused since money was a little tight at the moment.

Dell had their carriers come pick them up with no problems then that's when I was calling up Dell almost every other day asking when I would get the credit for the systems. For some reason, when they ship things back to Dell, they don't seem to ship them together, or at the same time. The first few times I called up, they weren't able to find anything that was returned. They had the info that they were picked up, but that's about it. This is about 2-3 weeks after they were picked up.

A week later, I'm still calling and they tell me that they got the monitors and the speakers. They'll credit me for those for now, but it'll take 7-10 business days. Now they are still waiting on the systems for some reason. So far, I've recieved $400 of the $1400 credit they owe. Fast forward to today, October 7th, I am still waiting on $1000 of credit to be put back to my credit card. Today should be the final day that I'll have to wait since they tell me all the authorizations have been passed and whatnot and I can finally get my money back.

All in all, it has been a huge hassle that I wish I never had to deal with. Though I have to say that the Dell reps have been extrememely courteous with me throughout the whole process.

I tried just now to recreate this,a nd I'm not getting the right prices. Anyone tried the deal lately?

You're going (under SB) to the 4550, then featured systems, then customize? The featured systems seem to max out at 2 ghz, and the customize option won't let you bump it up.

Gavin, as far as I know, this is standard operating procedure for most companies. I've had the same experience with Sprint and Dish Network. Once you return a product to them, it takes them forever to give you the credit. At least with Dell, the CSRs have been helpful.

Whoolly crap!!!!! I had a dell 8100 which I sold and rebought for cheaper earlier last couple of months (J%8k). I remember I bought the 8100 for $1700 when it just came out with the crappy 1.3ghz. I sold it for $1100 (J%8k), and bought another one for $1000 with better stuff (J%8k). So I have a 8100 1.3ghz, should I upgrade? Or what is the fastest processor I could put for the 1.3ghz, probably a 478socket. How much will it cost?

Ok about the power supplies, I had heard somewhere that Dell uses not standard Pin outs on their power supply. If this is still true upgrading your power supply to a standard one will FRY your motherboard. Can anyone confirm this?????!!!!??? On the question of do they send an XP cd with their systems, I seriously doubt they do, more likely a restore disk with all the cr@p that was originally installed on it. You have a valid key usually stuck on the side of the dell. All you need is an OEM install version of Windows XP, and use that serial, you have a perfectly legal copy installed then without all the installed Cr@p you don't want. Where you get the OEM install disk is your business.
