A few weeks ago a similar deal was around. I had my sister get one because I was just too busy to build her a system. I helped set it up for her and was frankly amazed by it. The 4500 is totally whisper quiet, you can't hear a sound. The manuals, etc. that come with it are also great-ranged down to the rank newbie but do contain info for everyone. Definately reccommended, in fact I may end up buying one for us as well as a second computer. And no, I don't think you can build a system this good and this quiet for this price.

Some cavaets and suggestions:

* (cavaet) Of course, 128 MB will not cut it. The MB has two DDR slots, check other deals for a 256 MB DDR stick.

* (cavaet) THe power supply, I'm told (didn't check) is very low powered-235 watts I think. We had absolutely no problem, if you start getting fancy on the things you swap in, may cause problems. I'd look at the optional equipment Dell offers and use that for a guide.

* (cavaet) Dell does not give you a Windows CD, they give you some sort of restore CD. Haven't used it yet. BTW, super-simple to finish configuring Windows XP on this system.

* Its a black system, remember that when getting monitor, speakers, etc. Actually the 17" from Dell isn't outrageously priced when you remember free shipping too.

* The upgrade to the MX videocard is $20-25. The DVD (lite-on I think) was about $30. We went for both at that price level. Seems fine for a nongamer.

* Remember to go through ebates for another 2% off.

I did everything you mentioned with the one I bought a few months ago... plus, added the $40 turtle beach sound card... love it!

Like you mentioned - very quiet! Sweet!

And, that guy who said he could build it cheaper was just a know it all ass... you can't build these for the price they are selling them for. Let him buy a $500 system from a Market Pro vender and suffer the wrath of a cheap-o no support 1.2 Ghz system.

Anyone know how upgradeable the 4500 is in general? And possibly how fast a processor it will be able to take MAX, for a possible upgrade in the future?

Isn't it worth $50 to up the 128 DDR to 256 DDR? So then you can actually USE the stick that comes with it and then add another 256 in the other slot for 512. Instead of having to get rid of the 128 and buying 1 or 2 more sticks? Or is DDR that cheap now that I can get a 512 stick for CHEAP?

Is the PC800 RDRAM that much better than the DDR Sdram? The difference between the 8200 and the 4500 only really seems to be that, you can upgrade the 4500 in every other way.

I'm debating whether to go 8200 or 4500...

Looks like you can pick up a stick of PC2100 DDR on pricewatch.com for $45 plus shipping. So for that $50, you'll have the 128 plus 256.

I've always heard NEVER upgrade the memory from the factory, always buy it from Crucial or somewhere else. Much cheaper.

The reviews of Dell systems on Cnet are getting worse and worse.

Cnet reviews

I just don't know if I should buy Dell anymore. I wasn't impressed at all with the last couple systems I purchased from Dell. Performance was slow and the systems were unstable, despite Dell's public image.

Does anyone care to comment? It seems that Gateway builds better machines than Dell...

I was planning on building my own computer. But, at this price the Dell looks awfully tempting. An Intel 2.4 gig cpu in retail box sells for 193 bucks alone! But, if they build this with a skimpy power supply, it might be money down the drain in the long run. I just got a good deal at best buy on a PNY TI 4200 for 99 bucks after rebate! One of the requirements for this card is a 350 watt power supply. If you need a 350 watt power supply now to run a gizmo, can you imagine the power requirements for gizmos a year down the line? Dont forget your gonna have to buy a modem and extra memory. mmmmm???

I care to comment on that one!

The Dell\Gateway argument is most likely as heated a gang war you can get as the Pc\Mac war, and I know that for EVERY good story about manufacturer A you might have, you will be able to find one from Manufacturer B. What I do know from personal and professional experience is the following:

I personally own a Gateway 6400 server running windows Terminal Server, a VPN etc. I also own one of these Dell machines. While I have always eventually had my problems resolved, I have had my server DIE twice (fried motherboard, then fried SCSI drive!) and nary a problem from my dell. I got my Dell for a LOT cheaper (comparatively speaking) than my Gateway, and feel it is much higher in quality. Whisper quiet and cheap as you can find anywhere. I reccomend Dell to my clients, and in fact will turn down a support contract if the client insists on getting gateway or (ackkkk ) Compaq. EVERY single client of mine who has purchased a Gateway has a horror story to share.

Yeah, I could build this system, but why? Dell isn't a computer manufacturer, they are a bank. They can offer these deals no sweat because it only takes them 4 days to assemble a computer from parts, and while I pay them immediately for the computer, they "float" with the payment to the part suppliers for 30 days or more. I have always been very satisfied with Dells price\value ratio, and have yet to be burned by making them my number 1 recommendation!
