Where is their datacenter located? In Europe? I notice the slowness on the network when accessing their control panel.

Are you talking of a domain forward or webspace? How in the hell did you mistakenly add a webspace domain. There are several steps to add a domain. One of the steps includes whois info in large type. Did you not check this? I mistakenly set up a forwarding domain that I cannot delete. I even sent a question to support asking them how to delete, but I have yet to get an answer. What do you expect for free. It really doen't matter since it is fowarding the lame supplied domain to my domain. I have totally forgoten about the supplied domain. If you set a forward from the supplied domain, don't worry about it.

From the FAQ. Your site will be hosted in our Data Center in New York. In total, we own 2 and operate 4 Data Centers in the USA and Europe.

They're an European (German, IIRC) company with good engineers and a strong intrastructure. They might sell your number to telemarketers, but who doesn't? If you don't use your real name and address you give them a right to use a clause in the TOS to cancel your account. That would suck if your site got popular a few months later, but 1and1.com saw your account info wasn't correct and cancelled your account.

If your site was popular enough for them to take notice of your name and address, and check to see if they were legit, you'd have to be pulling in some serious hits on your site. If that was the case, then the 5GB transfer they give you on this account would be no where near enough to support a popular site.

5GB is peanuts. Fine for a small website, or personal storage, but you'll need way more than that to support a popular site.

I loved 1&1, then someone linked directly to 2 of my files without my permission and sent my bandwidth usage through the roof then they bump my monthly premium up from ?5 to ?270......and they won't help me out....so I am cancelling and fighting them on the payment.

Make sure you set the money spent to $1.00 to be on the safe side

Where is this setting? I didn't give them any credit card information, so how can they charge me? I'd rather they just block further access than have to spend money for extra bandwidth! I'd hate to have to pay big bucks because I got slashdotted (not that I expec tit to happen any time soon)

Log in to your control panel, click on Account Tab, Under Billing Overview, Click Cost Limit, Set it to $1.00 Limit

After all is setup and working properly, what directories should have .htaccess files in them. I set things up, registered a domain and everything is working fine, but I assume there needs to be some type of security measures taken to prevent being hacked. I've heard people mention .htaccess files and such, but I didn't use them in the default install. What directories should they be placed in? Isn't the htaccess file the one that causes a popup box asking for a password? I wouldn't want that on my homepage. It doesn't make sense.

.htaccess is good for password protecting directory. If you choose to password protect a folder, an .htaccess file will generate and place in that folder. If you install some database driven forum, you will need this type of protection.

on .htacess files
For some reason 1and1 doesn't like .htacess files.
I uploaded some and they get automatically deleted a few seconds later. They have their own method for securing the files I guess. They have a really weird setup on there... I tell ya... they have at least 150 other websites on the server my website is on, they have some kind of crazy virtual server crap setup. You can add that same security popup box thing in the 1and1 admin page, clicking on "web space" or something on the side and then "protect directories" or something like that.

About the name servers
You can't just point your domain to their name servers, they have to have your domain in their server, or else nothing will come up. You have to go through the "order a domain" process, but there's an option where you can just transfer a domain, it costs nothing, and it should work. When you do that, it will give you the name servers to put in.

Disclaimer: I am a total newb at this stuf so cut me a little slack.

Since they don't give you access to IMAP does this mean that you cannot set up a mail server on this hosting space.

Wanting to know so i can set something up for myself to use for my school/professional/interviewing e-mail address without having to worry about all the spam that you get from other free web based e-mails.

If you can't set up e-mail here can someone point me to a good service provider that I could setup service with to gain this functionallity.

Feel free to PM me with the details

They offer pop3 email. Pop3 email emails removes messages from the server once it is downloaded by a client such as Outlook, OE, etc, but IMAP allows the messages to be viewed in a email client without removing them from the server.

For POP3 mail, you still have the options if you want to have all your e-mails downloaded and deleted from the server, or leave a copy at the server. Most POP3 e-mail servers also offer web interface to manage e-mails.

if you already having your own domain, you should be able to tranfer it to 1and1 using their transfer system since they mentioned this in the admin page. If you don't have one .tk will probably be the best choice.

I waited a couple hours to have my FTP completely setup. Try to log in sometimes later. It should work then.
