Can't you use a domain you registered elsewhere (NameCheap.com) and just update the DNS name servers to point to 1and1.com's servers?

Just got this reply :

Dear Foo Bar,

Thank you again for your interest. You do not have to change domain
name registrars. Simply go to your registrar's website and change the
domain name servers to 1and1's servers. Once you sign up for the
Professional Package and set up your domains, we will provide our name
server addresses to you.

Best Regards.

Bar Foo

I'm glad that they don't get your cc number or Paypal info, so they can't charge you.

I guess a potential catch would be 6 months later they go out of business?

RossMAN:

I haven't completed the entire process yet, but the first email describes the following process:

(1) Click on a link in the email and provide a telephone number for them to reach you.
(2) Within the next 30 mins, you should receive an automated call at that number giving you a 4 digit PIN.
(3) Using another link in the first email, enter the 4 digit PIN.
(4) You should get a second email at this point with the login information to access the configuration of the account.

BlueWeasel,

Thanks, that's exactly what I need.

Since I don't have access to Yahoo e-mail at work this will have to wait until I get home tonight.

Do you know what the control panel choices are?

Signed up, logged into my account and went straight to the FAQ. Here's the important ones.

How about (excessive) bandwidth?
If the data traffic generated by visitors to your website exceeds the free 5 GB in a given month, the additional bandwidth is charged at an industry-leading $0.99 per GB. The free traffic allowance is typically sufficient for a high 5-digit number of visitors.

Are there any limitations?
The offer expires December 31, 2003. That means only customers signing up prior to this date qualify for the 3 free years. Every customer can use the free offer only once and may not resell the service.

Why are you giving away a Professional Hosting Plan for free?
Our advertising agency asked us the same question! This is what we told them. We?ve been providing service to top US companies for years. So, when we wanted to expand to the end-user market, we decided to go with an offer only a global leader like ourselves could make. To show our confidence that at the end of the 3 years, you?ll be so impressed with our service that you?ll continue to work with us, and even recommend us to others. In other words, we?ve decided to invest more in you and less in our ad agency. Granted, this wasn?t the answer they were looking for, but we don?t exist to please them. We exist to please you.

Where is my website hosted?
Your site will be hosted in our Data Center in New York. In total, we own 2 and operate 4 Data Centers in the USA and Europe.
Please see Data Center and Connectivity in the About Us section for all details.

How can you pay for this promotion?
Cutting our advertising budget allows us to use the money to pay for the promotion. Less ads and the maximum use of grassroots word?of-mouth movement is our objective. We?re not worried about losing our shirt because, as the biggest web host in the world, we?re profitable, stable, and have been in this business for over a decade. Also, we control the entire value chain so we can buy servers, routers, connectivity, and bandwidth in bulk and that benefit is passed on to you.

How about support?
Any paid service of 1&1 comes with free 1&1 Express Support by Phone, Chat, or E-mail. However as the Professional Package promotion is completely free of charge, we had to limit the support to be handled via e-mail. But please feel free to send us as many e-mails as it takes to make and keep you a happy user. You will typically get an answer in the same or the next working day.

What are the obligations and commitments? Can I cancel anytime?
There are no obligations. You may cancel your account anytime. Unless you want to register domain names or you wish to add additional services, we even won?t ask you for a credit card.

How about existing and new domain names?
You can point up to 100 already registered domain names to your new 1&1 website. You may transfer them right away or over time. For a newly registered or transferred domain name, you pay just $5.99/year for each - all inclusive.

What happens after the three years?
You may seamlessly switch to any hosting plan ranging from $5 to $29 a month. Or you can decide to go for the full power of a Dedicated Server starting as low as $69 a month. Of course, you may also do so anytime within the 3 year period.

Catch?

3.2. Before using a website under a domain name, 1&1 may contain advertisements on the website for 1&1 Services or for the products and services offered by business partners of 1&1 or by other third parties.

3.3. Domain Names must be registered by 1&1 on your behalf through a variety of Domain Name Registration Services (each a "Registrar"). Each Registrar has its own terms and conditions concerning the registration and maintenance of domain names and you agree to be bound thereby.

4.3. You agree to design your websites in such a manner as to avoid overloading of the 1&1 Servers, by limiting the use of CGI-Scripts that require overly high processor capacity, and to use good judgment to provide a website that is designed in a technically competent manner. 1&1 has the right, should your website be the cause of interruptions in 1&1's ability to provide its services to other customers, to temporarily disable access to your website. In case 1&1 takes such a step, you will be informed thereof as soon as is practicable and 1&1 may work with you to remove the condition that led to the suspension.

Wow this is so bad. They assign you a domain like s86950743.onlinehome.us

You cannot change user name so you have to log in which a lengthy user (numerical ID).

You cannot point your own domains to it. I know there is a post to the contrary, but I'd like to see where the nameserver info is? I don't see it. Also, there is no place to add a domain, except through BUYING one from them.

Check out FW, someone was charged over $80 for buying an advertised $5 domain

Also, word is on WHT that once you register a domain with them, they hold it hostage. All is good while you are with them but if you try to change hosts, they won't alter the nameservers for you!

How do I unregister?

I too setup an account, but I am gonna register a domain with namecheap. Please let us know if this works.
