Damn. Can't believe I actually read through all these posts. Well, at least they all helped in my decision to sign up. Like many people said here, nice and easy set-up process, and extremely fast and reliable service.

Possibly the best deal of 2003 for me. Now all I need to do is think up a domain name. The few which I've tried were unfortunately already taken. Just my luck.

All I have is this so far. Can't think of anything else to do with it yet.

I have looked over the 1and1 site and cannot find about adding mail server redirects and pointing.

Anyone know a way around this where I can keep my domain email and have access without creating a new domain?

I do not think 1and1 allows configurations of dns.

I can tell you that although 1and1 told me to use the dns servers I did not switch my dns hosting over to them and my website domain is still pointing to their servers after several warnings my site would stop working after a certain date. Here's what you need to do. Create an A record in your dns record to point to the same IP as whatever your website (s########.onlinehome.us). You can find this info by visiting network-tools.com and plugging in your domain or you can simply try pinging your website on the command line. Then you will need to manually edit your .htaccess file found when you ssh into your account and move up one directory to configure those VirtualHosts. I also had configured certain directories as root to two different domains in the admin.1and1.com site just to make sure. My first domain worked pretty instantly, but my second domain took a day to work. I hope this helps. I'd post the link to my website but it's a private family forum and I don't want people to mess around with that but you may see my other simple website as evidence. http://www.trantrips.us

Oh don't forgot to create a CNAME record to point www.yourdomain.com to yourdomain.com also. Good luck.

why does one have to use the 1and1 dns servers? what's the difference in just using url forwarding? i signed up with namecheap and i have both options.

If we reach the 5gb limit, do they stop my website, or does it continue to function and charge us for extra bandwidth usage.

if it doesnt stop working, how can we kill our own website tempary incase we get near the limit. i dont really want to del everything just to prevent it from passing 5gb, so how would i go on stopping the service till the next month?

Now this is what online communities are all about... I can't believe how much I have learned from just this Thread alone .... Thanks everyone for sharing ...... We need to make this complete thread a Palm or Pocket PC book! It contains so much great information!

There should be a way to parse everything in a thread to a single file. Maybe forum admins can do it. That or somebody going through and PDF each page and compile them together.

There's your eBook.

why not just make a temporary index.html page with an apology that you are running out of space? no links or anything. if people access your pages directly, then you may have to move them to a different directory, just temporary.

however, if you are getting enough traffic to come close to your limit, shouldn't you be thinking about paying for the service? the cost of all data lost and wasted time trying to get support and data back are probably much higher than what you'd pay a hosting company that offers all that this company offers for free over three years. not to mention losing the reputation you'd have to have built creating all that traffic. (just my unsolicited 2¢)

Alright, i can't miss out on this deal so i'm going to try and buy a domain from Godaddy (or someone else if anyone has reccomendations) and then get it hosted by 1and1, but there's one problem, i'm a big NEWB when it comes to this stuff. Think i can get it done?

I mean, i can buy a domain from Godaddy then somehow get it hosted by 1and1 for free right? Anything i should be careful about? Sorry

Is there a way to enable or turn on virtual directories? (like an FTP server) on Apache setups??

TIA

edit1: To give visitors permission to view files in your website you need to create a .htaccess file in the desired directory. Use your favorite text editor to create the file and place the following line in it:

Options +Indexes

Now, upload the file to your webspace, specifically the directory in which you want visitors to see the files.

I bought a domain from 1and1 for $5.99. Seems like a plenty good enough deal to me.

It was said to not be a good idea by unfounded claims. I contacted support regarding this issue and if you check the FAQ's there really isn't an issue with tranferring the domain.

A couple of things to consider:

1. 1and1 will not let you point a domain name registered thru them to a non 1and1 IP. So you will have to move the domain name to another registrar if you want or need to use some other hosting. Once you transfer it to 1and1, you won't be able to transfer it out to another registrar for 60 days.

2. 1and1 has an $80 fee to reclaim your domain name if you let it lapse even one day.

Couldn't you just re-up your expired domain name with some other inexpensive outfit and have it point to 1and1?

Have had the service since the middle of October, and I have no complaints. Have not gone to the trouble of installing anything etc., so my experience so far has been limited to "fast and reliable." Read a few reports that lead me to register the domain with another company (godaddy.com) instead of 1and1, tho. Site is www.upup.us (Arcade Cabinet Blog).
