Do you have to stay on? Or can you cancel and leave?

Since they do not have your CC #, they will have a hard time charging you, but they can harass you though.

Does anyone's site work yet? Mine is s86950938.onlinehome.us and is still in 'Applying' mode. I can't ping it, or any other website on onlinehome.us. I've tried a dozen or so lower than mine with nothing. BTW 1and1.com expires in 3 days, so for a company that hosts sites and domain names, they dont seem to worried about theirs.

www.hd-trailers.net
my account's completely setup and i've just bought a new domain from namecheap for $8.88.

however, i notice that u can register domains from 1and1.com too for:

Domain US$/Year* Type Example
.com 5.99(flat rate) Generic domain www.YourName.com
.net 5.99(flat rate) Generic domain www.YourName.net
.org 5.99(flat rate) Organizations and clubs www.YourName.org
.info 5.99(flat rate) Information www.YourName.info

which looks really cheap! did i just waste $3?

Just signed up - this would be quite a deal if I can use my own DNS registrar... here's hoping!

Now the big question - do I still get in on 8-95.com's October 2 for 1 sale in case this falls flat??

You cannot change user name so you have to log in which a lengthy user (numerical ID).

You cannot point your own domains to it. I know there is a post to the contrary, but I'd like to see where the nameserver info is? I don't see it. Also, there is no place to add a domain, except through BUYING one from them.

Check out FW, someone was charged over $80 for buying an advertised $5 domain

Also, word is on WHT that once you register a domain with them, they hold it hostage. All is good while you are with them but if you try to change hosts, they won't alter the nameservers for you!

How do I unregister?

Regarding the nameserver thing, you have to click on the "Buy a Domain" (or somesuch) link on the control panel, but once you do that, you get to where you can use and external domain. I have been there. The problem is that I bought a new domain name today, from rackshack.net, and I have to wait a while till that new name propagates through the net.

Tech support can help you with pointing externally registered domain names to the webspace at 1&1. The tech guy asked me to wait till the new name i registered propogates.

As far as I see, there should not be any problems with this one. Anyways, I plan to put some photos online, and my existing space is brimming, so this should be perfect.

Hell, this is the cheapest storage for my work files (I am a phd student). Perfect, for me, so far

Found this press release from July 9, 2002 talking about 1&1: Linky

Snippets:

With more than 2 million customer domains hosted in its data center, 1&1 Internet is the largest Web hosting company in Europe. Over 4 billion Web pages are accessed through 1&1's data center every month. This amounts to more than 200 terabytes of Internet protocol traffic every month.

"Millions of websites already rely on our services, so it's essential that we run a robust and reliable network. We chose the Juniper Networks solution not just for its performance, but also for its extremely stable JUNOS Internet software, which ensures minimal downtime for our network and, more importantly, our customers' Web sites," said Andreas Gauger, CEO of 1&1 Internet.

I just signed up.

Used a spam account just in case, but I'll be checking it over the next few days.

Hope this goes through, and thanx RM.

in the my account tab you can set a cost limit. you cant set 0, but you can set 1. but they dont have cc info, so its just more of a safeguard

Hmmm.. just found out my spam account was disabled (b/c I was over my limit & hadn't cleaned it out in probably a year or more - I wonder if they'll keep trying to send the email. Or how long did it take to receive the confirmation email?

It's pretty obvious why they're doing this (at least to me, not to sound full of myself though)... no plans are selling! At least this way if ten people sign up in a couple years for a paying plan they get some subscribers. And if it's as good as some of the links posted here say then I definitely will be one of the aforementioned subscribers.

Either way, good find RossMAN

If this all turns out as well as we are hoping, I say this qualifies for deal of the year, if not DECADE!

Hmmm, free web hosting for 3 years and at $5.99/ea they are taking a loss on their domain registrations. Sounds like a risky business model to me...

I think I'm going to pass on this since I already have 4 web hosting accounts elsewhere.

Good luck to everyone!
