I waited a couple hours to have my FTP completely setup. Try to log in sometimes later. It should work then.
You do not have to transfer the domain to make it work. Just set up your nameservers correctly.

When you give them your number, is it just an automated message where you hit a button and it gives you a PIN, or do I have to talk with some n00b over the phone?

I've snagged an account and they seem legit. Professional even. It looks good but, add anything extra and they're right there to get you with extra fees. You don't need credit card info to sign up so, they can't take money from you so, it looks sweet if you need basic WebHosting + PHP + MySQL.

Login to your admin page, the clikc Web Space in the left column. Then you'll find a link for FTP and click on it. And you'll find your username and password to do FTP.

You don't need to buy a domain name. Just make sure your login is corrected

12.12.12.12 is the IP address of your computer, do you have this number correctly?

does anyone else find it odd that a .us site/host is located in germany?

where my 1and1 site traces too.

they also say this offer, which i've taken part of, is being done because they've finally opened up and created hosting services in the US. yet, they give us locations in Europe still.

from their promotional free hosting 3 year plan FAQ page:

Where is my Website hosted?
Your site will be hosted in our Data Center in New York. In total, we own 2 and operate 4 Data Centers in the USA and Europe. Please see Data Center and Connectivity in the About Us section for all details.

i'm happy with the way its turned out, but why lie about where its being hosted?

If I purchase a domain name from rackshack.net and transfer it to my 1and1 account, will I have to pay an re-registration fees or renewal fees of any type next year either to rackshack.net or to 1and1.com. Also what all do you have to do once you register the domain name at an external site, i.e. rackshack. I know I have to tell 1and1 what the new domain is but not sure what all the steps are. I just now figured out how to just get the page to setup to use the default domain name as the home directory. Hopefully someone will be able to answer my newb questions.

Thanks in advance

This is a thermite-hot deal. Took 5 hours for the web account to get set up. Not bad. What can be hotter than 3 years of free hosting (with good specs and from a reliable company) and a no-popup .tk domain?

Rackshack becomes the domain registrar for the domain that you registered. You will have to pay a domain renewal fee at the end of the registration period (which varies). Assuming you just registered your domain for one year, a year from now you would pay your domain registrar (Rackshack, in this case) a fee to continue to keep that domain under your name. The rest of your answers should be answered with the following FAQs from 1&1.

I already have a domain, how do I transfer this over to 1&1?

Can I view the status of my domain transfer?

How do I point the domain to my webspace?
