OK, old man here. 35 years old but recently decided I've been kinda bored and stuck and started nightlifing with the wife more. Grand parents see the kids more, we spend $50 on dinner, 2 drinks and dancing. Actually has cut our stress in half.

Anyways, one thing were noticing is that the music we like (indie rock, 80s rock, alternative) is completely gone replaced by house and Edm we find repetitive and dull. The kids seem to love it so I g uess we're gEtting old.. so explain it to me- what are some house artists to check out? Edm? School this old person

King Tubby is my favorite Dub/Electronica artist, but hes from like the 60s and 70s, and I do not think currently very popular, though he is likely "retro" enough that modern EDM people will like.

What is nightlifing ? Is that code for knife fighting? or Night Lifting? like some kind of weird bodybuilder thing?

Most of what you'll hear in public will be the pop music produced by edm artists. Calvin Harris, Tiesto, Zedd, Avicii, David Guetta, Diplo, Skrillex, Jack U are some big ones that come to mind that have had some big pop hits lately.

I don't find too much of the current music from the guys above to be very interesting - catchy for dancing sometimes, but not what I'd consider quality. But it's all in the eye of the beholder.

EDM is an umbrella genre, like Rock is. Elvis, Bon Jovi, and Led Zeppelin are all technically Rock musicians even though they're all completely different. I'd suggest making a Pandora station out of some individual tracks you find interesting and just take it from there. It's the pop trend of this generation, like grunge probably was in yours, and there's a ton of artists trying to get a slice of that pie. Most of them sound the same, they're just uninspired pop music, but some of it is legitimately good.

Like most music; it makes much more sense if you partake of the correct drug pairing.

Even if you find some EDM you like, they're probably still going to be playing the dull, repetitive stuff where you're going...

This can't be emphasized enough. "EDM" covers everything from Jungle and DnB, to Trance, to House, to Breaks, and on and on.

In fact, at most trendy clubs (at least around here) what you get is like top40 EDM mashups. I hate that shit.

Good deep house is awesome though, but it can be hard to find in some areas. You kinda gotta know how to dance to it to really enjoy it, in my opinion. It's Electronic Dance Music. If you're not dancing to it, you're not doing it right.

<snicker> You think that's old? Can't wait to see how you feel when you reach 50.

Look for jazz clubs and metal shows. You avoid the electronica with either.

I still say King Tubby
Otherwise Price Jammy or Lee "Scratch" Perry.

if your gonna go with "edm" go with 1st gen stuff that more or less sounds like somebody tinkered with some effects pedals while playing reggae

?

I'm glad my teenage years were in the 1980s because what you linked sounds like bad 8-bit video game music with modern instruments. Seriously, it sounds like something Robert Smith and the Cure would have done if they were sick that day and just said "fuck it, just whack a few sythesizer keys and let the record company figure out how to market the shit." Or Billy Mack from Love Actually making a record.

32 here and i've heard a lot of great house music. A lot of terrible house music too! You just need to spend some time discovering what appeals to you. As has been pointed out, it's quite a broad genre. It certainly can be repetitive though, but that's one of the aspects that I like about it too, it's good background music for certain settings.

Well, if i had a better frame of reference i could say "dub fiend sucks, know where they play the good stuff like dj x?" Did that make me sound 100?
