I used to listen to the Progressive Trance station on EDM.fm on occasion like 10 years ago. I'm a metalhead, but it was good stuff.

Clicked on that link and it's like I kept waiting 5 minutes for the actual song to start and it never did.

that's exactly how i felt when i heard progressive music for the first time.

i'm telling you, until you get the fever, you won't feel the magic. and i'm not sure you can get it anymore.

sorry for abandoning the thread, my head exploded from the good but overwhelming info. thank you! i'll be making spotify mixes, but i think another reason i minded the music so much is that i didn't drink enough

reminds me of the time I saw Sasha & Digweed dropping a 4 hour set - I swear there was a 25 minute song in there somewhere.

I'm older. I like Art of Noise, Yello, stuff like that. Most of what I hear today seems like it would be fine in a club where you're just dancing and drinking. Just super basic beats and some accents. What I don't get is going to a DJ concert and watching him like he's doing something. The light shows are cool though. Regular bands could work some of that into their shows.

if you have five bucks to spend, ebay this:
https://www.discogs.com/Judge-Jules-Clubbers-Guide-To-Ninety-Nine/release/127988

Ministry Of Sound's Clubbers Guide To '99

the songs meld seamlessly; the emotions that you get from the songs also meld seamlessly. it's more than a bunch of songs, it's a progression of emotions which together tell a story.

that's why you go to "see" a DJ. they make this magic happen, they dont just play songs.
disclaimer: most modern DJs suck industrial quantities of donkey balls. your mileage may vary.

My first exposure with EDM or house music was with Daft Punk back in the 90s. It was a truly amazing experience at the time since there was nothing else like it. Electronic music wasn't something you would hear on the radio or in many clubs back then. Now you can listen to EDM on the radio, and the current crop of songs sound so generic and mainstream.

I've been to many live shows from ATB, Digweed. Ferry Corsten, to Tiesto and they sounded bland to me. I am a big eletronica fan, but EDM is mostly soulless to me apart from a few artists.

As I grow older, my perception and appreciation of music change. Daft Punk's music from the 90s to present days has drastically changed, it has evolved, or matured like a fine wine, and so hases my taste in music. The problem with most EDM is that it all sounds like the exact same shit over and over.

Nice dude. Sasha & Digweed was my favorite act back in the old days. Sometimes I pull up Barbarella (Deep Dish Mix) on youtube and it instantly brings me back to 1998. I also saw them live back then, was one of my first raves and probably the first time I ever "danced". Loved your Robert Miles story too! I used to love listening to him.

Some good reccs in this thread. I did want to say one more thing, and the purists will hate me because its sooo "mainstream" but there is a huge reddit circle jerk (https://www.reddit.com/r/strobecirclejerk/) over the song Strobe by Deadmau5. It might be the most highly regarded EDM song ever:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKi9Z-f6qX4

I think its an absolutely amazing song and should appeal to even some of the haters.

Anyways, I can go deep with EDM but I only linked popular songs in this thread to try and introduce people to the genre.

Edit: Here's a link to Barbarella! Excellent track! Super long and full of interesting changes:

DigDog - I knew you and I would find some common ground.

But we still have our disagreements! I listened to your original Barbarella (never heard the original before) and I really appreciate the rawness of it. That being said, I totally prefer the Deep Dish Mix. Rose tinted glasses.

And you were right, I love that Faded song (although it is quickly becoming played out). I prefer the Tiesto remix which is one of the most played songs on Sirius BPM right now:

Modern EDM seems to be mostly a bunch of really good looking young dudes spinning their top hits. The "DJ's" aren't really doing much of what would be consider classic DJ techniques they just are playing music and since its all produced at the same BPM more or less then can just slide right from one to the next. THey dont change the songs at all so the 16-25 year old girls can sing along with the friends at the raves and festivals, which are huge mainstream productions these days.

Nowadays I listen to a lot of chill and tropical house. This song is quite popular right now. If you hear pan flutes, you just might be listening to tropical house:

edit: also, for the record i'm super sick of that song right now but its an example of the genre.

this song has that typical vocal style you hear in all the mainstream EDM now as well

like a pre-pubescent sounding girl singing melismatically over a dubstep beat, its so played out but honestly 16-25 year old women can't get enough of it so if you wan't to get laid....

I'm about to hit 40 and still love House/Techno etc. I got into it at 14 yrs old.

Not sure what I would have thought about it had I tried it at 35.

All I can do is recommend some all-time favourite stuff

Renaissance the mix collection: Sasha and John Digweed
Renaissance 3: Fathers of Sound
Renaissance 4: Dave Seaman
Global Underground: Lee Burridge
Nubreed: Steve Lawler
Lights out: Steve Lawler
Viva: Steve Lawler
(all of) Nocturnal Frequencies: Danny Howells

This is mostly progressive/tech/tribal stuff apart from the 1st 2.

There are loads more but these stick out.

I listen to a bit of various EDM, and the hardest thing for me is understanding the difference between them. For example, what is the difference between techno and trance? I had someone try to explain it, and they started going into BPM and such. Then I started asking about what defines dubstep since dubstep to me has always been the type of music that sounded like a bunch of random sounds mashed together, but I'd hear a Nero song, which is technically dubstep, and it doesn't sound like it. ...or you'd have my friend who heard Pendulum in my car, and he said that was dubstep. I corrected him in that Pendulum is technically drum-n-bass, which is another type of EDM that focuses more on drums. (That one is a bit easier to understand given the name. )

Here's a couple semi recent poppy jams I dig:

I think hitting up Hospital Record's playlists on Spotify is a good way to check out some mostly good newer stuff.

I'm not going to let the people trying to expose you to indie electronic music pretend that the mainstream acts are all terrible. They just want to feel like elitists. Some of the big players got there by being GREAT:

https://youtu.be/HFAZKKsGPBE

https://youtu.be/BC2dRkm8ATU

first off, i dislike the term Electronic Dance Music; i prefer, if we need to use a blanket term, "Techno", short for "music made with technology". Of which techno is a subgenre. (because we like it complicated)
EDM could also refer to many new wave songs played with synths; but Techno is only songs which are made with prerecorded sounds - no live performances.
(you can play a riff live, then sequence it - it still applies)

While it may be what you're talking about, "techno" is too specific a sub genre for the OP. I believe you mean "electronic." It's much more vague than "EDM" (which tries to show-horn it all under "dance") and acknowledges that it could be any style made electronically.
