Explain to me Gandolf the Gray vs Gandolf the White....

Anyway, you could have just checked here. specifically, or any of the first half-dozen or so results from google.

It never ceases to amaze me that people manage to find Anandtech forums, and even create accounts, and are able to post new topics... yet are unable to use the same intarweb toolset that got them here to figure out trivia questions.

I've come to the conclusion that people like to ask questions just to see what other people's responses to their questions will be. Kinda an odd behavior, yet here I am taking the bait.

of course that's why, does that surprise you? I mean, by your logic we shouldn't even converse in life, because all the answers can be found through research.

It's more enjoyable to interact with a human being than a computer.

Gandalf was of the Maiar, a race best described as being the 'angels' or 'demigods' of Tolkien's world.

After his death in combat with the Balrog, he was sent back by one of the Gods ('Valar') to take Saruman's place as the leader of the Maiar that had been sent into Middle Earth following the first defeat of Sauron, IIRC.

In the texts, I recall there being a phrase of something along the lines of "I have become what Saruman was meant to be" following his return, or something to that extent. Don't remember if it's the case in the movie or not.

the balrog was one of the ainur, just like gandalf. they were the critters that created the world. some of them went into the world afterward (the ones you come across in the movies and books are sauron, the wizards, and that balrog, though there are other, more powerful ones, melkor being the most powerful and evil). they normally live 'in the west' which is where the elves sail to at the end of the movie. the balrogs were minor ainur who were followers of melkor, and they took his form.

anyway, after the fall of numenor (due to sauron's poison) the lords of the west (the good ainur) decided a few of their own should go into middle earth to act as sort of guiding hand to help the elves and what remained of mankind against sauron. those were the wizards. they weren't the most powerful, but had unique traits that would be helpful, though they were not (and could not) directly challenge the might of sauron.

anyway, after gandalf defeated the balrog he traveled back into the west, and presumably they sent him back with upgraded powers.
