The movies didn't really explain how Gray became White...either that or I completely missed it...

He defeated the Balrog and died aswell. The "Council (?)" decided he was ready for a promotion, so he became a higher-class wizard. They threw in the new robe because they don't want their employee's looking like bumbs.

FTW.
Anyway, you could have just checked here. specifically, or any of the first half-dozen or so results from google.
It never ceases to amaze me that people manage to find Anandtech forums, and even create accounts, and are able to post new topics... yet are unable to use the same intarweb toolset that got them here to figure out trivia questions.
I've come to the conclusion that people like to ask questions just to see what other people's responses to their questions will be. Kinda an odd behavior, yet here I am taking the bait.
And, with that, you have my response.
