I don't even know if Macs had color back then.

Toasters did not edit, they switched video and had a CG.
They also ran early versions of lightwave.
Toasters learned to edit when the "flyer" came out

I still have one in operation at a large sports arena.

Fine, split hairs.

I so wanted a toaster way back when I had my Amiga.

Neat that you have one still running.

because some people actually want a computer that creates things other than viruses, spyware, and headaches.

<-- waiting until tomorrow's announcement of new pro-level macs.

And none of that explains their popularity/use today.

My employer has 11 editing suites , in two cities tied together with a t1.
When something works well, you tend not to upset the apple cart.

For office duties, we still use PC's so I have to support both.

6) they think they're immune to viruses and spyware.. this because they do not know how to keep a XP box clean (click click click, ask questions later)

because no one writes a virus, adware or spyware for Mac's because less people own them.

...or MS did a poor job designing security in 2000/XP by giving users unrestricted admin rights by default, so now they're copying OSX with Vista.

No problems here and I have used xp since before it was actually released. Sooo... I guess Macs are for computer novices. Is that what I am hearing?

Agreed, thats why I dont get what Anubis meant with form over function.

I do think they are too expensive compared to a PC where I can just install bsd/linux but then again it wouldnt be as easy to install and use as a Mac which is one of its main selling points. Also a lot of people dont like to mess around with their computer all the time fixing problems, for novices or even more advanced users sometimes we just want to get things done. Besides the already mentioned like no malware etc. the other thing I like is the hardware. I am also into hifi audio so I can easily see how a Mac is a more attractive option to combine with a home theater than a PC.

they appear far less intimidating than a generic windows box, i dont own one, but seeing how people approach them both where i work..the macs just look like a funner, friendlier machine..
i think this also extends to the os.

My iBook and Simcity 4 will disagree.

ooh. that and UT2K4, and maybe doom 3 are like the only games out on mac. Meh. If I can't tinker with it, I don't want to by it.

Since I don't get my jollies playing games I say that it's great for me.

But hey, if you enjoy playing games more than social interaction, I commend you.

As people said before, because they simply work. The only problem I've had with my mac is using Microsoft Office (namely word) which has crashed several times... iWork however, has not. It does everything I want it to, and efficiently. When I want to install something, I just drag the icon to the application folder... BAM it's installed. I want to uninstall something, I drag it from the applications folder to the trash can and BAM it's uninstalled, no having to worry about stupid registration keys and all that crap. It works. Although It may not have as many programs as windows does, the ones it does have that are soley for windows usually are much nicer then an equivilent windows only product.

Some of us don't really play games so that is a moot point (although I am hoping the new Civ 4 comes out on OS X though). I love my Powerbook, best computer I have ever owned. Was it more expensive than a Dell? Yeah. Do I give a sh!t? Not really, because I am still happy with my purchase. The real question is why do you care what kind of computer someone uses?

I can't wait for OSX on the x86 platforms...I most likely will switch to an Apple/modified OSX to run it on my PC platform boxes.
