Is the fact that they are shiny really worth the extra money when compared to a x86/linux box?

So that you can take pleasure in their misfortune?

I'd ask the same thing about people who find Lord of the Rings garbage quotable.

To each their own, I guess.

I have a 12-inch powerbook that i paid $1500 for. I enjoy using OS X , knowing im not getting no where near the spyware/virus trouble my PC friends are. My roomates P4 has crashed twice since we have moved back into school. My Mac? No problems whatsoever since I bought it in June. For me, its reliable, it gets the job done, and I dont have to worry about anything when I'm using it. Plus, I just like it, and thats how I choose to spend my money.

1) they are trendy - just like every other apple product, userbase totally built on hype
2) people think they are asteticially pleasing - the form over function people
3) people that are too lazy/stupid to figure out how to correctly use a PC
4) they have more money then brains
5) people still think they are faster at things like Photoshop, when they blantantly are not

That question is about the same as asking Why do people use Linux/Unix over Windows.

I'm out of popcorn. But I have the refreshments.

Simply : Because they work.

(no nonsense, easy to use, no hassle - other than maybe the price tag)

umm well Macs are about 10x better for running CAD software and video editing type stuff.

i know this from experience because here at work i have a monster Mac and a monster PC as well, and our software is multi-platform. it runs much smoother and faster on the mac, by a good margin. not to mention, when we had our preferred customer conference last week, we asked all the audience who uses macs and PC's ... 95% of the people use macs, and its for the same reason I stated above.

so yea, one reason is that they run CAD software much faster, reliable, and smoother than a PC.

Because of the OS which is effing light years ahead of Windows in stability and Linux in terms of usability.

Amiga with a Video Toaster. 1989.

I don't even know if Macs had color back then.

Toasters did not edit, they switched video and had a CG.
They also ran early versions of lightwave.
Toasters learned to edit when the "flyer" came out

I still have one in operation at a large sports arena.

And none of that explains their popularity/use today.
